🚨 SUMMARY: The OBR forecasts following John Healey's Budget
- Welfare spending will rise to £431.3bn by 2030/31 - an increase of £97.5bn a year in cash terms
- This includes £209.8bn on pensioner benefits, £110.7bn on Universal Credit, £69.6bn on disability benefits, £13.9bn on Child Benefit and £27.2bn on other welfare
- Inflation will peak at 3.75% in early 2027, up from the earlier prediction of 2%
- UK GDP growth will slow from around 1.25% in 2026 to 1% in 2027, before climbing to 1.6% in 2031
- Average UK unemployment will rise to 5.1% across 2026 and 2027
- The Employment Rights Act will "likely" have a negative economic impact because of reduced flexibility and greater uncertainty for businesses
- The landlord tax increases (property income) could contribute to a long-term rise in private rents and discourage landlords from entering the market
- Real household disposable income per person will be around 0.75% lower in 2030-31 than it expected in March 2026
- Higher earnings and frozen tax thresholds will increase income tax and National Insurance receipts by £9bn in 2026-27 and around £8bn on average in subsequent forecast years compared with March
- Net migration is forecast to fall to 120,000 in the year to mid-2026, then gradually rise to 230,000 by the year to mid-2031
- Nominal weekly earnings growth will slow to around 3.5% in 2026, then average roughly 2.25% a year
- Andy Burnham's first-time buyer scheme could raise house prices by increasing demand without enough new homes being built

The hidden tax measure in the Budget is huge for people paying tax under self-assessment - sole traders, partners, landlords, retired investors.
For 6th April 2028-29, you currently pay 50% of your income tax late in the tax year in question (in January 2029), 50% just after the year end (in July 2029) with any make-up payment in January 2030.
Under the new proposals you will pay your tax perhaps monthly or quarterly (TBC) from April 2029 onwards. A rough analysis suggests the impact is to draw about 50% of your tax bill forward, a huge cashflow boost to HMRC and a significant funding issue for the self-employed.
The Treasury recognises this, and expects to raise £1.3bn of additional tax in 29/30 as a result of this change.
The cashflow impact of the accelerated charge will send some businesses to the wall.

In 2021, the Uni of Nottingham spent £37.5 million buying a new campus, in central Nottingham.
They then spent £40 million developing it.
It is expected to be sold for £14 million.
Shearer West, former Vice Chancellor moved on to Leeds in 2024. She was paid £300k+.
Nottingham was 6th for modern languages in the 2021 REF and is the only university in East Midlands providing language courses. The closure of an objectively brilliant department by a Russell Group university raises questions about the 2015 decision to uncap student numbers and leave UK HE provision entirely to market forces timeshighereducation.com/new…

You have to assume that Russia similarly messed around with the 2024 GE won by Starmer. It would be strange if they didn't. Divide and conquer is their game. The solution is willing western partners, not an unwilling EU.

They can, but there is little institutional appetite for such pointless risk-taking with astronauts' lives again. The things we do in earth orbit instead are actually useful.

NEW: Staggering details emerging from Westminster Mags on the RAF Fairford plot today.
One of the five men arrested near the US military base called the police after a "handler" warned there was a bomb in the van, a court heard.
Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, and Nouman Essghir, 24, both appeared in court on Tuesday charged under the National Security Act 2023.
Abdulkarim, of London, is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service, by acting as an “intermediary” for the handler Ali.
While Essghir, also of London, has been charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK, relating to an alleged “reconnaissance” mission on August 22, around a month before the Fairford incident.
The group were ordered to drive the van loaded with petrol to RAF Fairford by a handler known as ‘Ali’ who police believe was working on behalf of Iran.
No explosives, or improvised explosives were found in the vans, the court heard.
Police did find a metal oil drum in each, two of which had petrol in, along with hard plastic water butts and internet-enabled dashcams.
Prosecuting, Louise Gray, said: “Shortly thereafter the message was received that there was a bomb in the vehicles and one of them called the police.”
Abdulkarim is alleged to have aided the organiser, Ali, who is believed to be abroad and to be acting in the interests of the Iranian state.
Ali is also potentially connected to an incident at the Israeli embassy earlier this year, where propaganda videos were posted online suggesting it had been attacked with a chemical weapon by a drone, the court heard.
Prosecutors allege that Abdulkarim aided Ali, buying equipment for the mission and receiving multiple payments from him totalling around £70,000.
Before the men, allegedly enlisted by Abdulkarim, travelled to RAF Fairford, £300 worth of petrol was filled into the drums in the back of the vans.

Not a big deal in the wider scheme of things but also, of course, not possible if the UK were still in the EU, or even just a customs union... 👇

Yep. In 1962 the USA actually did it. (Starfish Prime.) It would be an utterly desperate or self-defeating act for any of the major space powers. The more a country depends on satellites, the more it risks widespread damage to its own space infrastructure by detonating in orbit.
