If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day.
If you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.
But if you convince every man it’s a human right for the state to provide them a fish, and that if they vote for you, you’ll give them one everyday, then you could legitimize the systemic robbery of the fisherman.
You could temporarily shield each man from the economic reality of Genesis 3:19 and carefully curate a false sense of comfort among them by making them reliant on you.
Ideally, you could put them in a multigenerational cycle of dependence.
Once they’re dependent on you for the fish, you could leverage this dependency to gain a seat of political power for yourself for a lifetime through the people’s votes and support.
You’d get to be the hero.
A man of the people, who steals from the rich and gives to the poor.
Anybody who doesn’t like that, must hate the poor and that’s exactly how you’ll have to frame it to shut down dissent.
You could rob the fishermen more and more, progressively increasing each year.
So he works harder and harder just to keep less fish for himself and for his family.
That way you could have more fish to build more communal support.
When you’ve finally squeezed that fisherman for all he can produce, and you can’t keep the people fed anymore, you could demonize the fisherman.
Blame it on his greed, weaponize their envy and their desperation.
He could be the villain, to redirect the outrage of the people to when all the hungry mouths go unfed.
And you could ride off into the sunset to find a new place, none the wiser, with new fishermen and new mouths to feed who don’t understand the games you play and can only see as far ahead as their next meal.
