Another Reasons why I keep saying that Carrick is part of Manchester United biggest problem and even a bad coach can make world-class players look useless at Manchester United. Look at PSG before Luis Enrique arrived. They had world-class players in almost every position, yet the team struggled badly in Europe. Their midfield had Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz, playing alongside the world-class Verratti, but it still wasn’t working. Their attack had Neymar, Messi and Mbappé, yet they struggled to dominate Europe. Their defence had Ramos, Marquinhos, Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, but they still looked vulnerable at the back. Then Luis Enrique arrived, and everything changed. He brought in young João Neves to make the midfield work alongside Vitinha and Ruiz. He could even rotate Neves with Zaïre-Emery, and the team would still perform. He replaced the Messi, Neymar and Mbappé attack with Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Doué and Barcola. On paper, that wasn’t an upgrade, but the team became far more effective. He also brought in Pacho, a relatively unknown defender who wasn’t considered an elite player, and suddenly the defence started working. Think about it. Several established world-class players were replaced by younger or less celebrated players, yet PSG went from struggling in Europe to becoming one of the best teams in the world. Is that not proof of what good coaching can do? Even when PSG had several injuries, they went to Barcelona and won with an attack featuring Mayulu, Mbaye and Barcola. Why? Because their manager has a clear philosophy, a system and the tactics to get the best out of his players. Look beyond PSG. Unai Emery at Aston Villa: He took over a team battling relegation and transformed them into a side capable of competing at the highest level in Europe. Hansi Flick at Barcelona: He took over a struggling Barcelona side without major financial backing. Apart from bringing in Dani Olmo, he largely worked with what he inherited. He even turned Raphinha, a player the club was reportedly willing to let go, into one of their most important players. Look at how much better their football became under him, despite the problems in their defence. And it’s not just the big clubs. Look at Brentford, Brighton, Leeds, Como and Real Betis. Are all these teams performing better because they have better players than Manchester United? I agree that INEOS and the Glazers are major problems at United. But you cannot convince me that a genuinely good manager wouldn’t get much more out of this same squad. Good players need good coaching. A good system can make average players look exceptional, just as poor coaching can make world-class players look ordinary.
