Eric Williams detailed the various industries that were developed and financed through slavery. The idea that ending slavery cost Britain more than it earned from the slave trade is a complete misrepresentation of history, especially considering that Britain continued to rely on forced labor in Africa during the colonial period. Exploiting African people was too profitable for the British Empire to ever willingly end it.
PROFESSOR DOUG STOKES: Ending slavery cost Britain far more than it ever profited from the trade. The demand for reparations is simply blackmail trib.al/RKG602h

These are four books that I always recommend when the topic of the Transatlantic slave trade comes up. A lot of ignorant people feel comfortable speaking on African history despite never having read any books on the topic.

You don't need Wyscout to start video scouting.
It's not essential. No login is needed.
But to get going, you only need full games. And plenty of leagues stream them on YouTube for free.
Georgia's top flight, the Erovnuli Liga.
Wales's Cymru Premier, with English commentary on some games.
Serbia's second tier, the Prva Liga.
The USL Championship and USL League One in the United States.
Canada's Northern Super League, in the women's game.
@BeGriffis has put together a sheet of free links for 60+ leagues and competitions. I've put it in the comments.
And if there's a ground near you, go and watch games live. You'll see things that the video misses.
Clubs use Wyscout because it saves time.
Every game and every clip in one place.
It's a required tool. And If you get a role at a club, you'll probably get access.
Before that, you don't need expensive subscriptions.
Nobody hiring you cares where you watched the game.
They care what you saw, your process and your output.
Which league are you focusing on?
And where are you watching the games?

WHAT HAPPENED TO UNITED’S WINGERS
Mark Twain’s brother Orion had a habit of embracing new projects and beliefs, only to abandon them immediately.
In 1879, Twain wrote a letter to Orion, regarding some new initative of his. Twain enclosed $25, joking that his brother would have abandoned the intended project before the money arrived, so he should spend it on whatever had replaced it.
“You are in earnest while your convictions are new”, Twain wrote.
Which fits today’s Manchester United quite perfectly.
🧵👇
In the summer of 2022, Manchester United entered the transfer window knowing that they had a problem on the right wing.
Jandon Sancho, who had been bought under Ole, had a shaky debut season. Furthemore, he seemed to be doing better on the left, which is not all that suprising if you followed his Dortmund career.
Mason Greenwood, mostly used on the right side, had been suspended since January. But in the summer of 2022, United decided against addressing the position.
According to then-manager Ten Hag, the plan was for Sancho to continue on the right - until he apparently told the club that he wishes to play on the left.
Ten Hag and the sporting department were surprised by this development, so they rushed into finding a replacement. One was found and signed, on deadline day, for £81m plus add-ons.
Antony was Ten Hag’s preferred acquisition on the right wing, just as Sancho had been Ole’s.
In short, in 12 months, the club dropped £155m on two right wingers, one of whom didn’t wish to play on the right and one of whom was unable to play at all, at least not at the level needed in the PL.
It would be 3 years before United bought another wide attacker.
That’s how this incredible mess started.

"My most valued friend, Steve Biko, has died in detention. He needs no tributes from me. He never did. He was a special and extraordinary man who at the age of 30 had already acquired a towering status in the hearts and minds of countless thousands of young blacks throughout the length and breadth of South Africa.
In the three years that I grew to know him my conviction never wavered that this was the most important political leader in the entire country, and quite simply the greatest man I have ever had the privilege to know.
Wisdom, humour, compassion, understanding, brilliancy of intellect, unselfishness, modesty, courage—he had all these attributes… The government quite clearly never understood the extent to which Steve Biko was a man of peace. He was militant in standing up for his principles, yes, but his abiding goal was a peaceful reconciliation of all South Africans.” - Donald Woods editorial on Biko's death, 1977.
