The New York Times quietly deleted “the nation” from its piece on TSMC. Taiwan is no longer one.
Dan Wang’s Oct. 23 guest essay originally read: “TSMC manufactures nearly all of its chips in Taiwan, the nation that China’s Communist Party has long coveted.”
The live article now reads: “Taiwan, which China’s Communist Party has long coveted.” Same piece, same author, two words gone. No correction note.
The original wording is documented across search results and quotes. The current version is what appears on the NYT site itself.
This matches a long pattern. The Times has preferred “island” or “self-governing island” over “country” or “nation” in its own voice for years, a style choice reported in Taiwanese media as far back as 2006 and shared by most major Western outlets under the One China framework.
Beijing polices that vocabulary. After the Times hosted Taiwan’s President Lai at its DealBook Summit and the host’s wording was read as treating Taiwan as a state, China expelled NYT correspondent Vivian Wang (who had no role in the interview). The paper called it wrong. The U.S. revoked a Xinhua journalist’s visa in response.
When the cost of one word can be a reporter’s visa, it’s fair to ask who is editing whom.
Long overdue @serpentza

“it is the first time we have had a terrorist act that was planned to kill our compatriots, our children, based on the colour of their skin or their religion," Mr Macron said.
Conveniently, forgetting all of the Islamic terrorist attacks in France.
Terrorist shooting in Paris suburb marks 'turning point for France', Macron says trib.al/ZstVQnF
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Macron called the attack a turning point as the first terrorist act targeting victims based on skin color or religion, but the 2012 Toulouse shootings by Mohammed Merah were Islamist terrorist attacks targeting a Jewish school and victims due to their religion.

INSANE 🚨 100% of New York adult daycares that were audited WERE FRAUD
“We audited 15 of these — There's no record of a single meal, activity, single hour of supervision”
ILLEGAL KICKBACKS were also reported with these adult daycares. How the scam works is the daycares will sign people up and offer them $1,000 per month cash
The adult daycare can bill about $120 per day to taxpayers. So they make about $3,600 per person and give the person $1,000 of it per month back as a kickback
So they pocket $2,600. The person with the Medicaid insurance gets $1,000
Taxpayers are being robbed blind

95% of all the plastic in the world's seas and oceans comes from ten rivers in Asia and Africa. The Ganges is one of them. The real test of whether you're an actual environmentalist is if you can actually recognise this problem. Most can't.
They stopped the flow of the Ganga near Har ki paudi at Haridwar for next 18 days just so they can clean it before Diwali. And the moment the water level dropped the truth came out...the entire riverbed is buried under clothes, plastic bags, discarded slippers, and pure filth.
The natural stones that should be there..but completely hidden under our garbage.
Year after year the same story bhakts leave behind their waste the administration stops the water once a year, locals cleans up the mess we created and then we start dumping again the moment the water returns. 😒
You cant revere a river as divine and simultaneously turn her into a landfill.
If this is how we treat the river we claim to worship then maybe we dontt deserve to call her MAA at all.
Period !!

BREAKING:
Bukele announces that El Salvador is launching a military operation in Haiti against the gangs.
The goal is to free 4 Salvadoran citizens kidnapped by the Haitian gangs. Bukele threatens that El Salvador will eradicate the Haitian gangs if they hurt the kidnapped men:
“To the gang leaders and gang members holding our four compatriots hostage in Haiti:
Our kidnapped men are not combatants. They are aviation technicians who are part of our mission in Haiti, within the framework of an international mission. Our mission consists only of pilots and technical personnel, whose primary job is to carry out medical evacuations and save lives, not to wage war.
However, they were kidnapped in a cowardly manner while returning after buying food at a market in the area.
That is why, today, we have launched a military operation to rescue them. We have a single objective: to bring our four compatriots back home alive, without any harm.
However, I want you, the gang leaders, to understand one thing very clearly: today's attack is nothing compared to what is coming if we do not get all four hostages back alive.
And do not take our word for empty threats. We have already finished with the gangs in El Salvador, and we can finish with you too.
We still have time to avoid this.
Return our four compatriots to us alive, without any harm, and everything will go back to how it was before the kidnapping.
The decision is in your hands”

BioWare is not, like, a guy. BioWare closing is not like Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino getting fired or cancelled.
BioWare is a business entity that existed for 30 years. During that time people — including lead creatives who were responsible for the great games — came and went.
Some video game studios manage to maintain a culture and a sensibility around excellence and the key creatives either stick around for a long time or pass the reins to handpicked successors who share their values and preserve the culture and standards of the studios.
What has happened in the game industry over the last 15 years is that there came to be a widespread belief that the cultures that incubated excellent games were exclusionary racist, sexist, homophobic boys clubs that needed to change in order to welcome in different kinds of people.
Instead of hiring people who shared their values and sensibilities, the people at these game studios were pressured to push their workforces toward being 50% female while achieving racial equity. The staff of the studios changed dramatically, the cultures of the workplaces changed dramatically and the games changed dramatically.
The pandemic sent a lot of people into their homes to play video games, which seemed like it was going to drive an era of growth for the industry. At the same time, the new generation of gaming hardware required more detailed assets, more animation, and therefore more people to make these massive games.
So there was a huge hiring boom at the precise moment that there was an overarching focus of the demographics of the industry, which means that nearly every Western game studio’s workforce was completely transformed. Over 40% of games industry workers under the age of 25 identified as LGBT or nonbinary on recent surveys.
Additionally, some studios have had unique pressures that have driven a lot of turnover. At Rocksteady Games, for example, a lot of the people who made the Batman: Arkham trilogy were not interested in building the live service game Warner wanted, so most of the principals on those games left the studio during the production of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.”
The studio cannot pivot back to what used to be its strength at making single player titles after that failure because all the people who are responsible for the classic games are gone. They no longer have that strength. They no longer have the institutional capacity to make great games because great games are made by great people and the great people are gone. A similar thing happened to BioWare during “Anthem.”
They couldn’t just pivot back to making great “Dragon Age” or “Mass Effect” games after the failure of “Anthem” because too many people were gone and the culture had changed. They weren’t the same studio and they weren’t a great studio anymore.
The BioWare that was shuttered today is not the studio that made “Mass Effect 2” or “Knights of the Old Republic.” That studio hasn’t existed for many years. It was just the “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” studio.
