A massive 10-year study shows that muscle power, your ability to generate force quickly, is a far stronger predictor of survival than grip strength. Men in the lowest power group had ~6x higher risk of death Women: ~7x higher risk Strength still matters, but speed + force seems to be a better predictor of longevity. Think less: “How much can you lift?” Think more: “How fast can you move it?” Train for power. Live longer? mayoclinicproceedings.org/ar…

💊+🏋️‍♂️= Medicine. In our latest @TheLancetLongevity paper we argue: 👉 “Exercise prescription is medically indicated, professionally implemented, and clinically monitored.” It’s time to integrate exercise into medication management for older adults. Read here ➡️ thelancet.com/journals/lanhl…

Aging isn’t just grey hair and wrinkles. Beneath the surface, our physiology changes — quietly, predictably, and universally. These 7 physiological and functional hallmarks of ageing decline over time: 🧠 Brain health 💪🏼 Muscle mass 🦴 Bone density ⚡ Muscle power 🏋🏼 Muscle strength 🚶🏼‍♀️ Physical function ❤️ Cardiorespiratory fitness Each can be tracked using physiological biomarkers — and all are strongly linked to functional decline, chronic disease, and mortality. The good news? Every single one of these age-related declines can be slowed — or even reversed — with targeted lifestyle changes. This is particularly true with exercise. Regular training is the only intervention that ticks every single box — improving not just one, but all of the key systems that keep you healthy, capable, and independent for longer.

The main study of my PhD is now online! We investigated whether 8 weeks of aerobic exercise ‘preconditioning’ (to improve muscle fiber capillarization) augments muscle hypertrophy during subsequent resistance exercise training in older adults. 1/6 link.springer.com/article/10…

Published today in @IJSPPjournal along with my great friends @IrineuLoturco and @lucasa_pereira (open access): a well - deserved tribute to the brilliant and visionary Juan José González- Badillo , the pioneer of velocity - based training ( VBT ) . We discuss the velocity zones

A big new study of German elite athletes finds a correlation between vitamin D levels and grip strength. But after a deeper dive into other recent data, I'm STILL not convinced that means we should all be taking vitamin D supplements. More here: outsideonline.com/health/nut…

New meta indicates protein requirements may be as high as ~3 g/kg/d to optimize FFM retention during energy restriction. Note that FFM doesn't necessary = muscle mass. Also, protein intake from self-report may not be accurate. Interesting nonetheless... journals.lww.com/nsca-scj/fu…

‼️VERY important consensus document published this month‼️ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3974… ✅ Exercise is the most comprehensive therapy for health and longevity ✅ It is most effective when individualised, not a 'one-size-fits-all' Well done, led by @mariafiatarone @mikelizquierdo_

This has been needed for a long time! Redefining obesity A new report of @TheLancetEndo commission that overrides current BMI categories and better defines features and pathophysiologic consequences of pre-clinical and clinical obesity thelancet.com/journals/landi… open-access (such as an athlete with no fat excess is not obese, but is according to current BMI based definition)
