SNAP strengthens local economies. Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 in economic activity during downturns. When participation declines, that economic activity disappears, hurting grocers, farmers, and communities.

SNAP update: Another cut from the Republican reconciliation law takes effect today, cutting the federal match for SNAP administrative costs from 50% to 25%. Every state now gets half as many federal dollars to ensure SNAP gets to eligible families on time & in the right amount.

Today, I’m reintroducing the BASIC Act with @SenAlexPadilla to help colleges connect students with food, housing, child care, transportation, and other basic resources they need to stay in school and earn their degrees.
College should be a path to opportunity, not a choice between getting an education and putting food on the table.
No student should have to drop out because they can’t afford to meet their basic needs.

Work requirements don’t work when jobs aren’t available.
H.R. 1 eliminated the SNAP insufficient-jobs waiver, taking away a tool states used to respond to local labor markets.
Congress should restore it.

SNAP isn’t just about putting food on the table. Research shows access to SNAP is linked to better nutrition, improved physical and mental health, and lower health care costs. Read the new FRAC report: bit.ly/4xF5NhQ

Making it harder for people to afford food won’t make America healthier.
SNAP is a critical public health program that reduces food insecurity and supports better health outcomes. We need to strengthen SNAP, not dismantle it.

SNAP time limits were already harmful. Expanding them means even more people can lose access to food assistance despite continued need. We are collecting stories to document the damage these policies cause. Share yours: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…

Republicans claimed H.R. 1's deep SNAP cuts would "incentivize a more efficient & effective program," by which they apparently meant "forcing low-income families to go months without food assistance because they can't get through on overloaded phone lines or get help in person."

ALT Charisma Garcia, a 25-year-old mother of two, has tried for months to obtain an interview to complete a SNAP application. After weeks calling the agency only to get a recorded message, she woke before sunrise recently to wait in line at an Arizona Department of Economic Security office in south Phoenix. A security guard told her the agency wasn’t doing in-person interviews, so she headed to a food bank instead. She needed to feed her children, ages 3 and 6. “I need to do the thing that gets me the food,” she said.
More than 400,000 Arizonans have lost their SNAP benefits since July — the largest decline in the nation by a wide margin — after the state implemented changes called for in Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
