Despite the fact that my Twitter feed often consists of taking shots at the appalling state of the world, I am not a morose or despairing person. I’m a joyous cynic and a gladsome naysayer.

Just had some work done on my HVAC for a very good price. I have a guy. Philip. He does not have a website. He does not have employees. He used to work for a large HVAC installation/repair chain. He now makes a decent living on his own, and is frankly uninterested in expanding - he has plenty of work to pay his bills. “I am word-of-mouth only, and I only work for people I want to work for.” He is meticulous. He is honest. He is not *cheap* but his prices are more than fair. I got his name and number from a nephew, who got it from a dude he fishes with. The unspoken rule is that you don’t hand out his number to terrible people, bcz he might stop servicing your unit as well if you were foolish enough to point some jerk his way. It’s all a bit strange and perhaps foreign to many these days, but it works. Added bonus: I do not get 3 texts and an email every damn time he fixes something, bugging me to “rate his service.” 😂

In case anyone is curious - this is a young man, not an old dinosaur. Many young men are still quietly finding their niche outside The Machine out here in the hinterlands. Maybe some are in urban environs too, I dunno - I hope so. Makes me smile. 😄

Being “settled for” is only a negative thing if the person doing the settling has made no real peace with that. Otherwise, it’s what was formerly known as growing the hell up and realizing that you’ve been gifted some very good things in life, and constantly hankering after “more and better” is a miserable way to live, and cultivating what one HAS is actually pretty darn rewarding.
Also, take care that one’s sneering at “settling” - which can indeed sometimes be a bad thing - does not take on the twisted nature of declaring the cultivation of contentment to be a vice, or at the very least a mere facade over resentment. It isn’t. Gratitude and contentment can be REAL things, not merely “cope.”

A caution to Christians who are (rightly) alarmed at the heretical twist that has imposed sheer manipulation upon things like “welcome the stranger” or “love your neighbor” You do not battle that heresy by deciding that love and welcome are not even virtues at all. They still are.

Many people do not realize the degree to which much of progressivism is basically rooted in Christian ideas that went heretical. Classic Christianity was a holistic and layered worldview that afforded various virtues their proper place. Heresy tends to pick a *sole* virtue or two and run with them to the exclusion of all others.

It is. The position of the Church has historically been that. The fact that some later on foolishly took that to mean “nations should not exist and are bad and you have zero natural obligations thereto” is merely a heretical spin on that basic truth. Some of the earliest church writings literally speak of the “race” of Christians. It was taken that seriously as an irrevocable bond that surpassed (though did not destroy or eliminate) all others.

Isn't this just standard Christianity? Pretty sure mainstream doctrine is that you are closer to a brother Christian in Nigeria or the Phillipines than a Satanist here.
These people don't love Christ they just hate White people

The habit of inviting the entire world to chime in on your every personal interaction to judge “who was right or wrong” is a destructive and nasty one that no civilized person should cultivate.

We LOVED getting these on deployment. Kids would draw the wildest stuff and teachers clearly weren't reviewing them. They would draw Army men shooting people and blood coming out and then it would say "I hope you don't die." Everyone looked forward to getting them.
There is nothing more earnest or unhinged than kids’ letters to the troops

Look, I'm in Ecuador right now. I know the rules. I have to leave in 5 months or get a visa. If I stay for 20 years without doing that, I'm not "in limbo"; I've actively chosen to do something retarded – at Duran, Ecuador

Teenagers really are like AI agents. You need to give them very specific detailed prompts to get them to do what you want and they’re still gonna find a way to hallucinate BS anyway.

I rule nothing out entirely, especially if you include “has EVER existed.” 😄 History is long, and we know much much less about the dim past than we think we know.

I think there is a huge difference between the “MY birthday is a BIG DEAL” types, and the ones who just like to throw massive parties and their birthday is as good an excuse as any. Whole different vibe. 😄
The only defense I have for adults who throw big birthdays for themselves is that *a small subset* are actually great ladies who recognize that they're the natural event organizer in the friend group and everybody loves it when they make a weekend itinerary appear like magic

If you are not going to take steps (painful tho they may be) to make it easier for your kids to help you, then you need to have other measures in place (usually expensive ones) where you’ll not need much of their help. One of the reasons we moved back to SC (where aaallll the fam is), besides genuinely wanting to be closer and help with grands and stuff, is we knew old age was bearing down fast. And eventually it will not be “Nana, can you pick Jack up from school and keep him til I’m done with Dela’s appt?” It will be, among our sundry younger relatives “Who is checking on Nana today?”

I've begged my elderly parents to move in with us. No downsize to a safer house. No. Move closer to us. No. Now Dad's in the hospital, Mom needs a ride home and someone to stay overnight, and I have to work tomorrow and get my kids ready for school. This was entirely preventable. I've offered every reasonable solution, and they've refused them all. Older generations, you cannot insist on doing everything your way and then expect your adult children to rearrange their lives to make it work…

I have told all the young people in my family that, when looking for a mate, the list of positives you desire is important, as is the list of dealbreakers. You know what’s just as important? And that few do? The list of flaws that, while they may not be pleasant, you could pretty much tolerate those with some grace. None of us are going to marry perfection, and EVERY partner will have flaws. No, I do not mean “other ppl view that as a flaw but it doesn’t bug me.” I mean real genuine things that WILL bug you. And yes, all men/women should work on those in a marriage. But it is wise to know yourself well enough to know what flaws would make you crazy miserable to the point of threatening the marriage, and which flaws you might bitch and moan and sigh about, but could pretty much suck up *even if that never changed*. And if you think you are going to have a long marriage without encountering “Ima just have to suck it up” you are living in fantasy land. Make your list of tolerable flaws. The stuff you maybe wouldn’t love, but with which you could probably deal without massive effort. It’s a great exercise in self-knowledge if nothing else. If you find yourself unable to name “things I’d not like at all, but up with which I could put” then you need to climb down off your high horse before you’re ready for marriage.

I feel the same way about celebrity conversions. Very glad they found God, now LEAVE THEM ALONE with (hopefully) a real and loving and genuine local church family around them to grow in peace. They are not your damn trophy of the faith.
