On Oct. 31, 1936, a group of Caltech students and enthusiasts began rocket propulsion tests in Arroyo Seco, north of Pasadena, CA. Their work 90 years ago marked the beginning of @NASAJPL, now a vital part of NASA's exploration of the solar system and beyond. Happy 90th JPL!!

Teams also resolved an unexpected loss of communication with Voyager 1 when the Deep Space Network did not detect the probe’s signal during two scheduled comms passes. Contact was reestablished on Oct. 20, and the team has maintained communication since then.  go.nasa.gov/4is3TLi

Another successful fix ⏤ after 49 years and 16 billion miles! 🔧 Engineers recently turned off devices on Voyager 1 and substituted them with lower-power alternatives. Nicknamed the “Big Bang,” the energy-saving effort will allow the remaining instruments to operate longer.  ½

From a small group of rocket pioneers in 1936 to missions exploring Earth, Mars, the outer planets, and beyond, JPL has helped shape humanity’s understanding of the universe. 90 years later, and we’re still exploring.

To observe our globe whirling by, from atop a perch in the vacuum of space, is to experience beauty and awe and wonder (and vulnerability, too) like never before.

Can confirm. It’s always sunny in space. Yesterday, we completed USOS EVA 100 and installed a new solar array on space station. Over 25 years operating in the harshest environment and using the sun’s energy to do it! Here are a few photos taken on the spacewalk.

Collectively called 2MASX J09133888-1019196, these two galaxies are in the early stages of merging, pulled in by their mutual gravitational attraction. They're still separated by ~130,000 light-years, and reside in the constellation Hydra: go.nasa.gov/4zjJwHu

“We’ve never been in this vantage point in the history of humankind.” The Artemis II solar eclipse was a lot. In a good way. (54 minutes of totality! That's way longer than we get on Earth.) Explore more from the mission: go.nasa.gov/Artemis2LunarSci…

NASA astronauts Tracy Caldwell Dyson and @astro_Pettit test an analog mockup of Astrolab's Crewed Lunar Vehicle, or CLV-1. Astronauts are crucial to testing the human factors of our rover designs. Incorporating feedback from people with experience in space suits in reduced gravity is invaluable to our engineering teams.

No matter how scary your Halloween decorations are, it's hard to beat the spiders of Mars. These large radiating mounds, most often seen near the south pole, form when carbon dioxide gas breaks out from beneath the frozen surface. go.nasa.gov/4jGkLQS

Chez ISS season 2 preview: new chefs, new food, and some old connections are coming soon. We've been growing more plants on station to improve our cultivation techniques. Russian kale, dragoon lettuce, wasabi lettuce. The ground is running a similar crop to compare. Cosmonaut Anna Kikina joins us for a taste test!

One of my favorite Milky Way photos from ISS, with the multicolored lights of Southeast Asia streaking across the exposure from orbital velocity, while distant stars remain fixed by my star tracker. The long exposure intensifies the atmospheric airglow into a thick red band!
