Rate hikes do absolutely nothing to stop inflation when the inflation is coming from government entitlements running on autopilot and fixed to inflation.
Higher rates are designed to crush overconsumption that outpaces productive capacity, but the Fed could raise rates another 200 bsp and it wouldn’t put a dent in the consumption habits of Boomers drawing from Social Security. They get a check no matter what the 2, 10, or 30 year bond is yielding.
All that rate hikes do is simply blow out Federal interest spending on the debt even more, fueling the very inflation crisis the Fed is trying to fight.
We are surprised that rate hikes don’t have the same effect as before because this isn’t the 80s anymore. It isn’t even the 2010s anymore.
The old rules are inverted. Everything is breaking, and it’s only going to continue to get worse until politicians figure out where the source of the problem lies and gather up the courage to do something about it.
But I won’t hold my breath.
