I want to acknowledge the extraordinary people who have worked tirelessly to end the shackling of incarcerated women during childbirth in Australia. Senator Lidia Thorpe, Sisters Inside, Flat Out, and so many other advocates and organisations have done the groundwork, often over many years. Their dedication, determination and commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of incarcerated women is genuinely inspiring. I also want to acknowledge Senators Fatima Payman, David Shoebridge and David Pocock for their contributions to this important campaign. I've consistently acknowledged and praised their work because I have enormous respect for what they've achieved and continue to fight for. I'm simply a journalist investigating and reporting on this issue. I feel genuinely privileged to have the opportunity to tell these stories, bring greater public attention to the medical and human rights concerns, and hopefully support the efforts of those who have been fighting for change long before I began reporting on it. It is an extraordinary group of women and men, and I'm deeply impressed by their compassion, courage and determination. The credit belongs to the people doing this work. My privilege is being able to report on it. @SenatorThorpe @DavidShoebridge @SenatorPayman @DavidPocock #EndShackling #PrisonReform #WomensRights #HumanRights #auspol #UnitedNations #unwomen

So much for 'protecting women'.
32-year-old Ryan Dinnage, who was part of Nigel Farageโ€™s security team, has been jailed for eight and a half years for raping a woman while she slept in a caravan. He was charged in 2025, was still protecting Nigel Farage in April and May 2026, and was convicted in June.

When the Evidence Refuses to Behave: Transgender Healthcare and the Politics of Suicide When the Evidence Refuses to Behave: Transgender Healthcare and the Politics of Suicide By Miss Freda Wallace There is a peculiar habit in modern politics of demanding scientific evidence, then becoming terribly upset when somebody produces some. Particularly when the subject is transgender healthcare. We are told the evidence is inadequate, the research unreliable, the outcomes uncertain. The demand for more evidence becomes an endlessly moving finishing line, with politicians acting as referees and patients expected to run the race indefinitely. Then along comes a study involving 432 transgender young people, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, reporting a statistically significant reduction in suicidality following hormone therapy. How terribly inconvenient. The research, conducted by Luke Allen, Cody Dodd, Christine Moser and Michelle Knoll, was published online in November 2025 and appeared in the journal's February 2026 edition. Its title, Changes in Suicidality among Transgender Adolescents Following Hormone Therapy: An Extended Study, is hardly designed to set the literary world alight. Nevertheless, its findings deserve attention, particularly in a political climate where transgender healthcare is increasingly discussed by people whose medical qualifications appear to consist of having watched a television debate. The researchers examined clinical records from 432 transgender and gender-diverse patients aged approximately 12 to 20 at the beginning of treatment. All had received hormone therapy for at least three months, and the average follow-up period was 679 days, or approximately 22 months. Rather than asking patients to remember how they felt years earlier, the researchers compared suicide-risk screening results recorded before and after treatment began. The screening instrument examined suicidal thoughts and behaviours, including wishes to die, feelings of being a burden and suicide attempts. The results were striking. Of the 432 patients, 80 showed reduced suicidality scores, while 20 showed increased scores. Another six continued to report suicidality without a change in their scores. The remaining 326 reported no suicidality at either assessment. The average screening score fell from 0.46 to 0.15, a reduction of approximately 67%. This was statistically significant, with a p-value below 0.001. That figure requires careful handling. It does not mean suicide attempts fell by 67%, nor that hormone treatment prevented 67% of suicides. It means the average score on a particular clinical screening instrument declined by approximately two-thirds. Science is quite particular about these distinctions. Political commentary, rather less so. The improvement was observed across the demographic and treatment variables examined, including sex assigned at birth and age at treatment initiation. The researchers also found that treatment duration was not significantly associated with the size of the improvement. That last observation raises an interesting possibility: improvements may occur relatively early in treatment rather than increasing steadily with every additional month. However, the study cannot establish precisely when improvements occurred or why. And here we arrive at the distinction between scientific evidence and political certainty. This was an observational study, not a randomised controlled trial. There was no comparable group of untreated patients against which to measure the results. The young people were also receiving care within a multidisciplinary clinical service, potentially including psychological support, medication management and other interventions. Consequently, the researchers cannot demonstrate that hormones alone caused the improvements. That is a legitimate limitation, and one that should be acknowledged rather than hidden beneath a conveniently placed footnote. The study also tells us something important about the patients who did not improve. Twenty recorded increased suicidality scores, and six continued to experience suicidality at an unchanged level. Treatment was not universally associated with improvement, and those individuals matter every bit as much as the patients whose scores declined. Seven patients discontinued hormone therapy during the period covered by the records, including four whose gender identities had shifted. The study's eligibility requirements also mean its results cannot describe outcomes for every young person who entered the clinic or subsequently left treatment. These details are not embarrassing exceptions to be concealed. They are part of the evidence. Good healthcare does not require pretending that every intervention works for everybody. It requires understanding who benefits, who does not, what risks exist and how services can respond when somebody's needs change. Yet transgender healthcare has become a peculiar political battlefield in which uncertainty is frequently treated not as an invitation to investigate but as permission to prohibit. The absence of a randomised controlled trial is sometimes presented as though it renders every other form of evidence worthless. But medicine routinely uses observational research, particularly when randomisation presents ethical or practical difficulties. The strength of a conclusion depends on the study's design, consistency with other research, possible confounding factors and the outcomes being measured. None of this makes observational research infallible. It simply means that evidence must be evaluated rather than dismissed because it does not satisfy an idealised experimental design. The authors themselves acknowledge the limitations of the existing literature, including small samples, limited follow-up periods and the lack of comparison groups. Their new study extends an earlier investigation involving 47 patients, using a substantially larger sample and longer observation period. It does not settle every question about adolescent gender medicine. It does provide additional evidence that reductions in suicidality can occur among young people receiving hormone therapy within specialist clinical care. That matters. It matters because the people represented by these statistics are not theoretical constructs in a parliamentary debate. They are young people navigating adolescence, mental health difficulties, families, schools and healthcare systems, while an extraordinary number of adults argue over whether their treatment should exist. It matters because decisions about healthcare access have consequences beyond the intellectual satisfaction of winning an argument. And it matters because the burden of scientific uncertainty should not fall exclusively on the people seeking treatment. Restrictions, delays and withdrawal of services also have potential consequences, which deserve investigation rather than an automatic assumption of safety. The central question is not whether gender-affirming hormone therapy is a miraculous cure for every psychological difficulty. No credible clinician should claim that. The question is whether appropriately assessed patients can benefit from treatment, what the balance of benefits and risks looks like, and how those outcomes compare with alternative approaches to care. This study contributes one important piece of that picture. It reports a meaningful reduction in suicide-risk screening scores among 432 young people following hormone treatment. It cannot separate the contribution of hormones from the wider care they received, and it cannot establish long-term outcomes beyond its follow-up period. Nor does it provide direct evidence about suicide mortality. Nevertheless, its findings cannot simply be waved away because they complicate a preferred political narrative. There is something profoundly strange about a culture in which politicians demand ever more certainty about transgender healthcare while displaying extraordinary confidence in the consequences of restricting it. The researchers have produced data, explained their methods and acknowledged their limitations. That is how science is supposed to work. The political response ought to be equally disciplined: examine the findings, scrutinise the weaknesses, commission better research and consider the consequences for patients. Instead, too much of this debate resembles a courtroom in which the verdict has already been written and the evidence is being invited to attend as a courtesy. Science does not owe anybody a politically convenient conclusion. And neither do the 432 young people whose medical records made this research possible. Research reference Allen, L. R., Dodd, C. โค๏ธSHE MATTERS: VANA-REESE SCHUSTER-TOGIATAU!โค๏ธ *SUPPORT VANA-REESE'S FAMILY: gofundme.com/f/supporting-vaโ€ฆ Five days after she was injured in a drive-by shooting at Fitzys Loganholme in Queensland, 19-year-old Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau passed away. The men who killed Vana-Reese were strangers to her. They also injured three men in the attack on October 24, 2026. Vana-Reese is the 58th Australian woman killed this year. Last year we lost 80 women to violence - the year before 106 women were killed. "Vana-Reese is so deeply loved by her family and friends," her GoFundMe reads. "She holds a special place in the hearts of so many." The men have not yet been caught. Logan District Detective Inspector Ian Galpin urged anyone with information to call police. "A 19-year-old woman in the prime of her life who was simply going out for a night out with friends has had her life taken from her in the most cowardly way," he said. "We have not stopped and we will not stop until these people are identified and taken into custody. "There are people out there who know exactly who was involved in this offence and know exactly why it occurred," he said. "I'm asking those people to brave enough to come forward with that information and contact police." If you know anything please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Sam Woodโ€™s second bail application has failed after a Supreme Court judge heard he strangled Snezana Wood so badly she was unable to talk. Itโ€™s alleged Wood attacked Snezana and it was her daughter who came to the rescue. Wood tried to have suppression orders in place and the judge is still considering the application. The prosecutor argued he should stay locked up because the case was strong and the โ€˜complainantโ€™s evidence doesnโ€™t stand aloneโ€™. As well as a witness, there was evidence of injuries to Snezana that were observed by others and photographed.
