DAVID SEYMOUR QUESTIONED OVER THE GENE TECHNOLOGY BILLS At an ACT Party meeting on 3 November, several women stood up to question David Seymour over ACTs support for the Gene Technology Bill and associated HSNO Amendment Bill reforms. At the meeting, one woman also challenged him over his previous derogatory comments about people opposing the Bill and GMO release. In a statement previously published on his own public media accounts, David said: “Any serious scientist will tell you, there is no danger, its all made up by the kind of scientifically illiterate greeny muppets who think the earth is flat and the sun is some greek god riding a chariot across the sky - the ACT party wholeheartedly supports liberalising New Zealands gene technology laws” Despite David and other ACT MPs making statements about the speculative economic benefits of gene technology, the ACT Party has yet to produce an economic assessment demonstrating what those benefits might actually mean for New Zealand farmers, exporters or everyday Kiwis. Yet the risks of contamination, impacts on conventional and organic farming, and the potential loss of New Zealands GE-free export advantage still deserve serious answers. Here’s what you need to know: GENE TECHNOLOGY BILL – Opens the door to wider use of genetic engineering and GMOs / GE in NZ. HSNO AMENDMENT BILL – Changes the framework for regulating new organisms and hazardous substances (this is the back door for the Gene Tech Bill). ACVM AMENDMENT ACT – Changes the rules governing agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines, including new research and approval pathways, potentially including experimental GE Tech such as mRNA injections, methane inhibitors and dsRNA pesticides. Three different pieces of legislation connected regulatory changes. And some very important questions about the future of our food system. So what’s at stake? From potential health and safety risks and environmental contamination, to the future of GE-free farming and the premium reputation of NZ produce. These decisions have consequences that are incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to reverse once these biotechnologies are released into our food system and environment.
