Some personal news. My first book of poems is now available to buy. Poems with a political slant and humour when appropriate. Available to order through Olympia Publishers and Amazon.
Total common sense 👍🏻
Paul Nowak, "The national minimum wage is £12.71 an hour"
"Nobody on this panel is on £12.71 an hour"
"And I think it is right that we are looking to increase people's wages"
"Why? When low paid members get a pay rise, what do they do, they go out and spend it in local shops and local restaurants"
"They don't squirrel it away in offshore bank accounts"
My view:
For someone earning the least, a pay rise can mean putting the heating on without worrying, buying fresh food, or getting through the month without borrowing. That matters in its own right. People deserve more than a lifetime of work spent barely scraping by.
There is an economic value too. When household budgets have been stretched to breaking point, extra income helps meet needs that have gone unmet. That spending supports other people’s jobs and gives local businesses customers who can afford to walk through the door.
We spend so much time asking whether the economy can afford to pay people more. We should also ask what it costs us to keep so many people poor.

Working full-time on minimum wage can leave you earning too much for legal aid, yet unable to afford a lawyer.
I’ve tabled an amendment to raise legal aid thresholds before more cases move to magistrates’ courts. Your access to justice shouldn’t depend on your bank balance.

National Fitness Day is a great reminder of importance of finding time to move, whether you walk, run, cycle, or swim! 🏃🏻♀️ 🏊♀️ 🚴♀️
Because there is strength in the union ✊🏻
Union membership: up.
Not by a few thousand.
Or 10,000.
But by 192,000.
The biggest increase since records began.

Totally agree, the sooner the better!
‘Britain is a country where people can do incredibly well…can be successful. We want that, but we also want people to pay their fair share.’
A bank windfall tax could fund a much needed “social tariff” for household energy bills

The privatised water companies have to be renationalised - we have to stop them slowly poisoning us as they extract more profit and reward shareholders while the Government does nothing meaningful. It’s the very definition of insanity.
The vast majority of England's rivers, lakes and coastal waters are polluted by sewage - according to a new survey by the Environment Agency.
Its research found just 14% are in good ecological health - while not a single body of water is safe from toxic chemicals.
Campaigners said England's rivers were some of the filthiest in Europe - despite repeated Government promises to clean them up.

Until recently the prevailing narrative seemed to be winning elections meant low-bar politics, division & scapegoats.
Last few by-elections have been won by positive & hopeful politics, coupled with candidates who feel like they give a damn about their community.
More please.

This photo takes me right back. Working as a home carer for Stockport Council.
It was my first proper job. A special job. But one of the toughest I've ever done.
I know what it’s like to wash someone, cook for them, and make time to actually listen to them before rushing off to the next call with the clock ticking.
I know how it feels to graft hard day and night doing tough, physical shifts for wages I struggled to get by on.
That's why I've always fought for a fairer deal for social care.
And I'm proud we started laying the foundations for change through the Employment Rights Act with the framework for the first ever fair pay agreement for adult social care workers.
But that’s also why the Prime Minister's announcement today matters so much.
A National Care Service could be genuinely transformative.
For decades, governments have kicked this issue down the road because they have seen it as too risky, too difficult and too complicated.
That changes today.
