The UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board has rejected the sunsetting of UNAIDS, reaffirming its support for a continued, streamlined and efficient Joint Programme.
At its special session, the Board approved the strategic direction for the transition, emphasizing that it must:
✅ Keep communities at the centre
✅ Protect human rights and gender equality
✅ Maintain inclusive governance under the PCB
✅ Ensure a phased transition shaped by country contexts and readiness
The Board also called for stronger country-level leadership and community co-creation and co-leadership, while protecting the gains of the HIV response.

Mr. @Twbaptiste presented an overview of CLM and the implementation of the 2026 CLM cycle, highlighting how community participation and systematic monitoring can identify barriers to accessing quality, acceptable, accessible, acceptable, affordable, and responsive HIV services.
Over the three days, @rrpplus’s technical team and community representatives will work to strengthen the link between CLM and advocacy by:
🔹 Agreeing on processes for validating findings and prioritizing issues for action.
🔹 Identifying responsible stakeholders and decision-makers at health facility, district, and national levels.
🔹 Developing evidence-based advocacy messages and communication tools tailored to different audiences.
🔹 Establishing mechanisms to document commitments, monitor corrective actions and track progress.
🔹 Developing a practical advocacy action plan with clear responsibilities, timelines and indicators.
The workshop reinforces a rights-based approach that places the dignity, confidentiality, meaningful participation and lived experiences of people living with HIV at the center of advocacy.

Happening now, @rrpplus is convening a three-day advocacy strategy workshop from 28–30 October 2026 at Savana Hotel, Bugesera District, in collaboration with @RBCRwandaand with support from @giz_rwandathrough the Rights-Based Program (RBP).
Building on the progress made through the 2024 Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) cycle, supported by PEPFAR through @UNAIDS, and the 2026 CLM data collection conducted across four districts and seven health facilities.
The 2026 CLM exercise covered COR UNUM and Biryogo in @Nyarugenge; Kicukiro and Gatenga in @KicukiroDistr; Remera and Kinyinya in @Gasabo_District; and Nyagasambu in @RwamaganaDistr.
Using five digital tools, the exercise documented community experiences with HIV services, including feedback from service users, key populations, adolescents and young people, alongside facility observations and facility managers.
The exercise reported 1,231 respondents, providing a foundation for further data validation, analysis and reporting.
In his opening remarks, Mr. CYIZA Jean Claude, CLM Program Manager at RRP+, emphasized the importance of evidence-based advocacy and called on participants to transform community-generated evidence into actionable recommendations that address service delivery gaps and strengthen accountability.
The goal is clear: move beyond data collection to coordinated action, ensuring community evidence informs decisions, strengthens accountability and drives improvements in HIV service delivery.

Today, the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) holds a special session to consider the future of the UNAIDS Joint Programme, including a roadmap for its further transition and integration into the UN system and beyond.
As the Joint Programme evolves, its role in coordinating the HIV response, providing technical expertise, ensuring accountability and amplifying community leadership remains vital to ending AIDS.

📢 Civil society voiced needed to shape the future of global health!
Earlier this month, HEAR-CSO in collaboration with the WHO Civil Society Commission, launched a survey aimed to inform WHO-hosted Joint Task Force on Global Health Architecture Reform.
The Task Force is developing proposals for reform of the functions and mandates, coordination and decision-making, and financing approaches that shape global health architecture.
The survey should not take longer than 15-30 min and is available in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

This was one of the most frank and informative webinar I’ve ever moderated.
Speakers brought clear, candid realities to the persistent gaps in the HIV cascade. The data on when we lost direction and focus on testing, treatment, and viral suppression (2019) was sobering.
There were urgent calls for institutionalised engagement between people living with HIV and parliamentarians, and for renewed advocacy that treats RETENTION in care as the vital link between diagnosis, treatment, and sustained viral suppression for all PLHIV.
We must be outraged that 570,000 people living with HIV died in 2025.
Be deeply concerned that 9 million still have not accessed treatment and that children remain part of this population. And curious to know why 10.6 million people living with HIV are not virally suppressed despite biomedical progress.
People living with HIV must demand that leaders in the HIV response return focus of HIV to the cascade gap, strengthen retention, and move closer to epidemic control and the lives we can still save. OUR LIVES.
Progress in the HIV response should be recognised. But it cannot come at the expense of the gaps and barriers that the data continues to show year after year.
