I have a cynical take on this
There's no dearth of payment solutions, Bitcoin hasn't sufficiently monetized yet. No payment tech however magical, can solve an economics problem
Demand problem cannot be solved by supply solutions

You want your dentist to be an expert in dentistry and not an expert in running a Lightning node.
One thing I talked about at my TABConf Wavelength workshop that I keep thinking about: Bitcoin builders, please build for your dentist.
It’s our job to make Lightning payments easy for people who are not experts in Lightning. It’s our job to build in such a way that your dentist can make Lightning payments with absolutely no idea what channels are or what inbound liquidity is.
Not everyone can be, or should be, an expert in Lightning. That’s our job!
Thankfully we now have some pretty amazing tools for Lightning payments that don’t require having read an Andreas Antonopoulos book. If your dentist can scan a QR code then they can use an application powered by Wavelength.

AI agents can now pay for things on their own.
Lightning Labs just opened Wavelength to everyone on Bitcoin mainnet. Agents can send and receive bitcoin over Lightning without a human approving every payment.
Card rails were built for a person standing at a checkout. Agents buying API calls and data a few cents at a time need something else.
That's the rail I work on every day at @voltage_cloud. The next wave of customers won't all be human.

Lightning catch-up (biggest first):
1. @lightning Wavelength is live on Bitcoin mainnet. Apps and AI agents send and receive over Lightning with a few API calls. Self-custodial, no node, no channels, no liquidity to manage.
2. @lightning also floated LayerTree: a non-custodial Bitcoin scaling design that plugs into Lightning, shares one UTXO across up to a million users, and lets anyone exit in a single tx.
3. Security week for node runners. @acinq_co shipped Eclair v0.14.5 (second security release in five days). @lightning rebuilt lnd, tapd, btcd, and litd after the eMudhra CA compromise. Updating Go alone does not patch installed binaries. Core Lightning also pushed a funds-at-risk fix in v26.06.9.
4. Real payments. @paywithsoap and @HiglobeOfficial added Lightning via @voltage_cloud. Eligible Cash App users can pay Soap merchants from USD. @WhiteBit added Lightning deposits and withdrawals.
5. Agent economy. @voltage_cloud shipped Agent Pack for coding agents. @TunnelSats sells WireGuard tunnels over HTTP 402. @gpvansat's Sats for Bots and Amazap keep cataloging paid Lightning APIs.
