שעת סיפור. פעם פעם פעם בזמן התואר הראשון, לפני שהכרתי את אישתי המושלמת, יצאתי לדייט אחד עם ערביה
כשהתחלתי איתה היא עבדה בבית קפה והיה לה שם מערבי כזה בסגנון ״ניקול״ או משהו כזה. לא זוכר בדיוק. חשבתי שאולי היא כווכזית או גרוזינית ולא ניסיתי לפענח יותר מדי. נראתה לי חמודה אז ביקשתי ממנה מספר והמשכתי הלאה
קבענו להפגש באיזה פארק. בדרך לכיכר היא שלחה לי הודעה ואמרה שהיא חושבת שיש משהו שהיא צריכה להגיד. ואז כבר הבנתי
כשנפגשנו היא סיפרה לי שהיא ערביה מוסלמית והיא מספרת לי את זה על ההתחלה כי חשוב לה להיות גלויה שאם אח שלה או אבא שלה ידעו שהיא יוצאת עם יהודי הם יהרגו אותה וגם אותי
התחלה כזו לדייט לא הייתה לי אף פעם.
דיי מהר הבנתי שלא יהיה פה המשך אבל סיפור החיים שלה סיקרן אותי והפער בין התרבויות שלנו עוד יותר.
שאלתי אותה - איך זה הגיוני שחברי משפחה שלך ירצחו אותך? לא אוהבים אותך? אתם לא אוכלים ארוחת בוקר ביחד בשבת? והיא ענתה - אתה לא מכיר את הטיפוסים האלו
היא סיפרה שגדלה בבית ספר עם יהודים ותמיד הייתה לה רתיעה מהתרבות ממנה הגיעה. סיפרה שתמיד ניסתה להתקרב ליהודים, אהבה להיות בחברה ליברלית יותר
היא אמרה שהיא מחפשת לצאת רק עם יהודים אבל תמיד כשהיא מספרת להם שזה צפוי לסכן אותם הם לא ממשיכים לדייט שני, ואני כבר ידעתי שגם איתי זה יהיה ככה
ועדיין הייתה שיחה מרתקת. שני אנשים שגרים באותה מדינה אבל מתרבויות כל כך שונות. תגידו מה שתגידו על חרדים, כשמישהו מהם חוזר בשאלה הם יושבים עליו שבעה אבל לא יוצאים להרוג אותו
ונזכרתי בזה היום כי אני רואה הרבה אנשים חושבים שהסיבה שלא להקים ממשלה שתסתמך על ערבים היא סיבה גזענית, כאילו הגזע הוא בעיה - וכמובן שזו שטות. אני לא חושב שגזע הוא דבר שיכול לנבא מוסר או אידיאולוגיה. אבל תרבות בהחלט יכולה לנבא מוסר וגם אידיאולוגיה. ופערים באידיאולוגיה ובערכים *הם* הסיבות שבעיני זו תהיה טעות להקים ממשלת מיעוט צרה שתסתמך על המפלגות הערביות השונות
אני לא כותב את זה כי אני גזען. אני כותב את זה כי כשנציגי המפלגות האלו מדברים - אני מקשיב להם. לערכים, אידיאולוגיה, מטרות. ואלו הסיבות שאני מסתמך עליהן. למשל, מפלגות שלא מוכנות להכיר במדינת ישראל מדינת יהודית ושלא מוכנות להכיר בחמאס כארגון טרור

In thirty minutes of wearing it in public, I've had two people come up and challenge me about the hat, asking what language it was and then glaring at me when I said Hebrew.
I'm not Jewish.
I don't like living in a world with ethnic hatred. This is bullshit, and it has to be pushed back against. You can have whatever feelings you want about a war on the other side of the world, but hating someone here because of what language you think they speak is disgusting.

I was expecting Israel to be a little America—mostly English-speaking, a land full of convenience.
What I found was distinctly Middle Eastern—the people are brash, speak with their hands, and often don't know a lick of English. There are stray cats everywhere, mopeds, and graffiti. The street signs are in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. There is a mosque on prime beachfront property in Tel Aviv.
