I prefer to wait for confirmation and BDA before speculating on the timing and implications of this campaign.
Nonetheless, it aligns with what several analysts have been suggesting over the past few years and months – that Ukraine will eventually develop its own deep-strike weapons in the medium to long term and remove itself from Western targeting restrictions.
The refusal to provide sufficient numbers of Western deep-strike weapons and allow Ukraine to engage targets within Russia is more likely to result in a loss of control over the targeting cycle rather than reinforce it.

THIS. Or to paraphrase "Ye cannae break the laws of physics". There is a assumption, sometimes unspoken, sometimes explicit, amongst too many "disruptors" that existing systems are they way they are becuase of hidebound reactionaries in procurement, rather than F = ma
"proper" missile territory. In the end, it all comes down to the iron law of capability (to borrow from @Samdavaham).

Uncle Sam needs more ships, because our security challenges are increasingly naval in nature. That said, this entails real tradeoffs: shifting priorities away from other forces (sorry Army and Air Force) and also probably higher, not lower, taxes.
