At the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI), held at Nalanda University, Rajgir, on 26th October 2026, Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, delivered the Tarlok Singh Memorial Lecture on “Data for Development: Strengthening the Evidence Base for Viksit Bharat @ 2047.” In his lecture, Dr. Garg highlighted that bridging the distance between national targets and their achievement begins with measurement. In an era of a data deluge, the challenge lies in turning diverse information into reliable evidence for informed policymaking and inclusive development. The lecture also outlined the ongoing transformation of India’s statistical system through more timely, frequent and granular statistics, greater use of administrative and alternative data, technological innovation and stronger statistical capacity.
