Tom Brown and Paul Rudovsky have done an amazing job of compiling data on golf design/construction projects the past few years.
I used the data to create an interactive site that shows where courses are being built/changed, who’s doing the work, and what stage of the project they are on
This is my kind of land-scouting strategy. I bet every decent-sized city in the country has enough rabid golfers to make this work.

This is another aspect of the concept of “patina,” and its loss, which I mentioned the other day.
For a long time, golf was somewhat exempt from the typical and boring obsession with cleanness, newness and “optimization” because clubs and facilities weren’t raking in $$$, so they didn’t have money burning holes in their pockets to make them restless and jealous about their neighbors’ latest projects.
One downside of the new golf economy is that the ego and self-consciousness of many memberships and owners now has an outlet, and we’re seeing what poor taste a lot of people have. Clubs that *could* do this stuff, but choose not to, deserve more appreciation than ever.

The best locker rooms on this list never got “modernized”
They kept the original metal lockers, the spike-marked benches, and the carpet that should’ve been replaced in 1987. This is proper.
Meanwhile clubs keep destroying their own history so some board can chase the latest style and slap “locker room renovation” on their résumé. Modern lockers and fresh carpet never age well.
If you are a part of an old historic club, walk in and feel like it’s a “spec home”bathroom your club has lost its soul.

If you can’t go to a place like this with your buddies every once in a while and have a blast just beating it around a goat ranch then you don’t actually like golf.
