As a content creator, everthing you post is an experiment. Learning how to interpret this data is going to be a big part of your success. So let me walk you through how I interpret my data. For context, I am a small and relatively new creator. I have however spent the last 15 years working with data, half of that associated with Marketing Departments. I live and breathe engagement data. There are two main metrics I am looking at on my content. Engagement (how many people stop and watch) and Retention (how much they watch). I've even included a recent shot of those stats for a short that did ok, but not great. Let's start with Engagement. I often see this one hand waved away as "the luck of the algorithm". But an algorithm is just maths and there are things you can do to improve your performance. Namely Targetting and Capturing Attention. Targetting is how you tell your platform of choice who the content is for, mostly your Title, Description and Tags. All content get's bucketed and as users are swiping through their feeds, the platform serves up content from buckets they historically enjoyed. Your goal is to land in buckets along-side content like yours. If a viewer likes content like yours, they'll possibly like yours. This is where research is super important, go look at what creators with similar content are doing. For me lately that has been the likes of @VexTheSunEater and @sansinvt as I've been posting clips with my Daughter and they also post content with their children. I want to end up in similar buckets to them as their audience may show interest in my content. Then there's Capturing Attention, your edit/title needs to make people pause to see what you're about. I can't tell you how to do this, it's different for everyone. Your goal is to make sure that first second or two of your video and your title makes people want to see what the other x many seconds look like. Experiment with this stuff, look at your numbers. In this video's case I feel like my tagging missed the mark and the first seconds may have been a little slow. Possibly a snappier edit, maybe a sound effect might have helped with the initial engagement. Be brutally honest, you can't improve if you can't find things to improve on. Next up, Retention. This one show's you where you lost some people's attention. Some of this can be affected by your Targetting above, but this is also where you can really hone your craft. You want everyone watching the entirety of your content, and you need to be really honest with yourself when people don't. In this case my retention dropped off around the 6 second mark. Rewatching the short, there wasn't much of note at this mark, although I do feel the opening was a little weak. Where I think I really fell off is the last 10 seconds of the video basically said the same thing twice, and I feel the second way it was discussed was better. I could probably have removed the middle 5 seconds and had a shorter and better short. Everything you put out, watch your numbers like a hawk. Review what they mean in the context of that content, as well as over all for your channel. - Are the metrics going up or down? - Can you see places to improve? - What can you do differently next time to see the impact? There is still a random number generator involved when it comes to your content getting served up. However you have some control over who it gets to and what they experience.
