After the rise of the BLM movement, several Black mayors in major cities either increased police budgets, passed crime bills, or authored Cop City projects.
Keisha Lance Bottoms approved the early plans for Cop City in Atlanta. In DC, Bowser signed multiple crime bills. Karen Bass increased the LAPD’s budget in Los Angeles. Cherelle Parker raised police funding in Philadelphia. In San Francisco, London Breed initially supported defunding the police but later reversed course and added more officers. And in Chicago, Lori Lightfoot called in the National Guard during the George Floyd protests.

I feel like any analysis of the current state of DC that doesn’t include democratic mayors & governors across the U.S. who, overwhelmingly, carried the retail industry’s lie about “organized retail crime” and called for increased policing during 2020-2022, is incomplete.
