Before seeking hospital care, he called his younger brother, Sam, asking whether he could obtain ivermectin. Sam could get it, but it would take several days. Mike later said a nurse friend might be able to help him, but his condition worsened too quickly. On August 5, he entered Hoag Hospital in Orange County, California. That decision marked the beginning of a devastating eleven-day ordeal. Dr. Mike was placed on an oxygen mask and made one boundary unmistakably clear: he would not consent to being placed on a ventilator. Although that wish was honored, other now-familiar elements of the COVID hospital protocol soon followed. His family was prohibited from entering the hospital or standing at his bedside.
