Wise words on how to read a book. For more on the art of reading: historyda.substack.com/p/liv…
In 1982, the U.S. Air Force shared a reading-improvement guide to help senior military members handle heavy reading loads.
I read all 63 pages so you don't have to.
Here are the 10 most interesting quotes from it:
1) "Reading is more than picking up word after word. Reading is picking up ideas, sorting them, weighing them, and then throwing away the useless and saving the good."
2) "Reading habits matter more than most people realize—lighting, posture, distractions, and especially interest. There is no spur to concentration like honest interest."
3) "Are you careful about having good lighting when you read? Do you read with the radio or television on? Do you pay any attention to having a comfortable position when you read?"
4) “Different materials have to be read at different speeds. As Francis Bacon wrote over 300 years ago, ‘Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested'…You have to vary your reading speed according to the kind of material you’re reading and what you want to get out of it.”
5) "You don't drive at the same speed in traffic or over a bumpy road as you do on an interstate highway. In the same way, you have to vary your reading speed according to the kind of material you're reading and what you want to get out of it."
6) "One of the basic reasons for reading loss is the lack of an incentive–that is, lack of purpose or direction. A man wandering about in a snowstorm or otherwise without sense of direction will travel in circles. That holds true also for a man who reads aimlessly."
7) "When you read, read for a purpose. Tie your reading to your work, your hobby, or your personal life. If there is no real connection there and you still feel you ought to read the material, set it up as a challenge–a mental contest between yourself and the author."
8) "You have to push yourself hard in your regular reading, find out where you are weak, and concentrate on strengthening those points. This will require concentration and perseverance. It will also take time. But if you follow through conscientiously, your efforts will pay off."
9) "By reading, we gather all the accumulated knowledge of all the generations all over the world."
10) “There is no magic formula. You have to find out what the essentials of good reading are and in which of those essentials you are weak. Then, by special exercises and by particular attention to those essentials in your daily reading, you can gradually increase your speed and understanding. It takes work and more work, but if you stick with it, the results will amaze you.”
And my favorite line from the guide:
“Good reading is not like good looks—it doesn’t come naturally. You have to work at it.”

🇺🇸 Gen. Isaac Stevens’ son conquered Mount Rainier. His name was Hazard. He also earned the Medal of Honor.
Hazard was wounded on the same charge that killed his father. He recovered and returned to the field. On April 19, 1863, Hazard led the assault that captured Fort Huger, Virginia. For that action he received the Medal of Honor in 1894.
After the war he returned to Washington Territory. On August 17, 1870, he and Philemon Beecher Van Trump made the first documented successful climb of Mount Rainier.
They planted a flag on the summit and spent the night in a steam warmed cavern in the crater before descending.
Stevens Peak, Stevens Ridge, and Stevens Canyon on the mountain are named in his honor.
🇺🇸 This general stood just 5’3”. They called him “Little Napoleon.” And he died leading his men.
Isaac Ingalls Stevens graduated first in his class at West Point in 1839. He was an engineer who served with distinction in the Mexican War, was wounded at Mexico City, and later became the first governor of Washington Territory.
Then came the Civil War. He took command of the 79th New York Highlanders.
On September 1, 1862, at the Battle of Chantilly, thunderstorms and heavy fire slowed his lines advance. Five successive color bearers had died.
Stevens rode to the front, seized the fallen colors, and charged.
He called out to his men: “Highlanders! My Highlanders! Follow your general!”
The advance forced the Louisianans back into the woods. Stevens pursued. A bullet struck him in the head. As he collapsed, his body twisted and wrapped itself in the flag, still gripping the flagstaff. He was 44.
He was posthumously promoted to major general.
His son, Hazard, was wounded in the same charge.

Medal of Honor recipient Sammy Davis, who inspired the movie, “Forrest Gump,” was given a harmonica by his mother. He would play “Shenandoah” at night in the jungles of Vietnam.
His unit of 42 men took on 1,500 Viet Cong. With a broken back and crushed ribs, he went across a river twice rescuing Americans, and then continued the fight.
Survivors of the Viet Cong unit said they could hear him at night. Recently, we were honored to have him in South Carolina at @woffordcollege. 🇺🇸🗽

When Anglo-Saxon and Frankish kings resumed minting coins to restart their economy, they had no working silver mines or sources, so they melted down precious Byzantine silver works accumulated at their courts to make their first coinage.
Isotope values for post-Roman coins in Northwest Europe match Byzantine silver, showing that the first Anglo-Saxon and Frankish coinage were minted from recycled Byzantine silver. "Erratic, gold content offers further confirmation that the silver did not stem from fresh mining but must have been drawn from recycled metal."
"The similarity with these Eastern Roman/Byzantine objects is sufficiently close to suggest that Byzantine silver was the dominant source of the silver powering the great seventh-century surge of minting around the North Sea. This has previously been suggested, but the results presented here offer the first physical confirmation of the use of Byzantine silver."

Victor Sheymov (1946-2019), a high-ranking Soviet KGB major and cryptologist who defected to the United States....
He served as a major in the KGB's Eighth Chief Directorate, specializing in cipher communications and security oversight in Moscow. In May 1980, Sheymov, along with his wife Olga and their five-year-old daughter Elena, vanished from Moscow in what became the CIA's first successful exfiltration of an entire family from deep inside Soviet territory. After being smuggled out and debriefed, he provided the U.S. with critical intelligence on KGB cipher systems, internal operations, and various Soviet plots. His survival and hidden presence were kept secret for nearly a decade before he publicly surfaced in March 1990. He became a U.S. citizen, authored the memoir Tower of Secrets, and founded the cybersecurity firm Invicta Networks. He passed away on October 18, 2019, at the age of 73.
. . . .
A silent apartment on a tree-lined avenue in southwestern Moscow sat completely undisturbed on a Monday morning in mid-May 1980. The breakfast dishes were neatly arranged in the sink, children’s toys lay scattered across the living room carpet, and personal identification documents remained tucked in their usual desk drawers. When thirty-three-year-old Major Viktor Sheymov failed to report for his shift inside the heavily fortified headquarters of the KGB’s Eighth Chief Directorate, alarms sounded across the Soviet security apparatus. Sheymov was no ordinary bureaucrat; he was an elite cryptographic communications specialist who held the master keys to the Soviet Union’s global diplomatic, military, and espionage cipher networks. When investigators arrived at his apartment, they found that not only had the major vanished into thin air, but so had his wife, Olga, and their five-year-old daughter, Elena.
The disappearance triggered an emergency mobilization of Moscow’s Seventh Directorate—the KGB’s elite surveillance wing—alongside thousands of internal militsiya officers. Sheymov’s position at the Eighth Chief Directorate gave him direct, unvarnished insight into the darkest operations of the Kremlin. He supervised the security of cryptographic transmissions connecting the Lubyanka to Soviet embassies, military bases, and deep-cover spy residencies across the globe. Through intercepted communications, Sheymov had learned of the regime’s covert wet-affairs operations, including KGB complicity in the preparations to assassinate Pope John Paul II and the bloody invasion of Afghanistan. Disillusioned by the corruption and ideological deceit of the Soviet elite, Sheymov had resolved not merely to defect, but to inflict maximum structural damage on the apparatus he served.
His opportunity arrived during a temporary duty assignment in Warsaw in 1979. Slipping away from his KGB minders, Sheymov walked into the United States Embassy and initiated contact with the CIA, offering a treasure trove of cryptographic secrets on one non-negotiable condition: the Americans had to exfiltrate his entire family out of the heart of Moscow together. For CIA Moscow Station and the Directorate of Operations in Langley, the request bordered on the impossible. The CIA had never successfully extracted an entire family of three from behind the Iron Curtain under the relentless, 24-hour surveillance of the KGB capital. A single nervous flinch from a five-year-old child at a checkpoint could mean execution for the parents and an international catastrophe for Washington.

I've never met a Polish citizen named Donald. Is it even Polish? @Michael_Yon
POLAND 🇵🇱 🚨
The Catholic Bishops have released a statement on the crisis between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki
'We also ask believers to support our homeland with their prayers.
Let us pray for light and wisdom for those in power and all those responsible for public life, so that caring for the well-being of the inhabitants of our country and for the common good will be their most important duty'
The monk missed a few books in his historical study, and as such is incorrect in his historical knowledge. Striking, because most of the documents showing the clear lineage of Halloween as a Christian observance to pray for the departed Saints, Martys, and later all souls are Catholic, and many are located in his own orders archives (Benedictines).
Among the major ones showing a clear lineage and which as a Benedictine he would have access to, and possibly would have had to study during his formation are:
1. Liber Pontificalis of Pope Boniface IV who established the All Martyrs/Saints in 609 AD.
2. The Papal Records of Pope Gregory III moving the date in 731 AD to Nov 1st which starts in those days at sundown on October 31st.
3. The Chronographia (entry for 835 AD) of Sigebert of Gembloux where Pope Gregory IV got the French Emperor Louis the Pious to observe the All Saints, Martyrs, and eventually Souls (on Nov 2) throughout all his realm, establishing the prayers for the dead on All Hallows Eve (Oct 31st at Sundown) All Saints Day (Nov 1st) and All Souls Day (Nov 2nd).
Outside of that, secular scholars such as Ronald Hutton (Stations of the Sun) have examined Samhain and found NO connection or tradition to observances or offering to the dead as the Monk alleges. This idea of Samhain and offerings to the dead came from later formations in the 18th Century, long after All Hallows Eve was established.

Stanford University student Elsa Johnson became a target of the Chinese Communist Party in 2024.
Elsa attended a private school as a child with a heavy focus on foreign languages and became fluent in Mandarin Chinese while still in elementary school. Years later after she was accepted to Stanford, she studied international relations and researched Chinese industry and military tactics while working at the Hoover Institution on campus.
She soon came to the attention of members of the Chinese Communist Party, which has a heavy presence at Stanford and throughout Southern California. There are currently more than 1,000 Chinese students attending Stanford each year, and the university has received more than $64,000,000 in private donations from Chinese individuals and organizations since 2010.
In June 2024, a man claiming to be a fellow Stanford student named Charles Chen contacted her online. She was not initially suspicious as they had many mutual associates, and his photos and posts appeared to be centered on campus. But his questions and requests quickly put her on edge as he invited her on a paid trip to China. And he seemingly knew details about her that she had never shared with him.
When she tried to disengage with him, she began receiving threatening phone calls by Chinese speakers. Elsa contacted Stanford administrators and the FBI, who told her Charles was likely affiliated with the Ministry of State Security, had been posing as a Stanford student for years, and had targeted at least ten other female students since 2020 in a similar manner. They also told her she was under physical surveillance on campus by the Chinese Communist Party.
Elsa wrote articles in the Stanford Review and The Free Press about Chinese influence on campus, and in March 2026 testified about espionage threats on college campuses before the House Committee on Education and Workforce.
For episode 270 of the Spycraft 101 podcast I spoke with Elsa about being targeted by a foreign government right in the middle of a US college campus. The episode is available now.
