As I tell my students (the good Mr. Gold included!) - most leaders were at least a bit Italian fascism curious during the Interwar. From artistic and movement aesthetics to economic and political corporatism and beyond. Note this does not apply for the regime north of the Alps.
The New Deal wasn’t fascist but it objectively wasn’t antifascist. The man who ran the first New Deal (Hugh Johnson) was a Mussolini stan. Socialists at the time called FDR a fascist due to the corporatism of stuff like the NRA

During WWI, William Faulkner was rejected by the U.S. Army. He went to Canada and joined the RCAF. Never made it overseas, didn’t even get to fly a plane until after the War. Then he returns to Oxford, MS in a fake RAF officer’s uniform, carrying a cane and affecting a limp. 😂
hearing for the first time that novelist Patrick O'Brian (of _Master & Commander_ fame) invented much of his own biography, didn't know how to sail & had no practical experience doing it, wasn't Anglo-Irish gentry but rather English working class, barely educated, concealed his early marriage... Everything he learned about sailing & the 19th c was from obsessive research & reading books. O'Brian comes out to be a far more puzzling, eccentric, twisted, anachronistic figure who lived in isolation on a small hobby farm in France, deeply secretive, insecure, brooding, exiled, aloof, yet TOTALLY COMMITTED TO THE BIT. I like him even more now (am currently reading Master & Commander)

In American letters, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville stand high among those who show, in both life and work, how an inheritance requires diligent and discerning contemplation through the moral imagination. They were born to a great tradition, but they did not stop there.
