Spot rates minus fuel rose in every equipment type this week. Dry van is at $2.23/mile, reefer at $2.71 and flatbed at $2.61, up 0.5% to 1.3% on the week (minus fuel). Month-end and the start of peak retail season added demand, but posted trucks are still 22% to 26% below last year, and that’s what’s keeping rates high. Flatbed is the tightest board by far, with 41.7 loads posted for every truck.
One more to watch: a possible strike by about 250 ILWU watchmen at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach was pushed to Wednesday, November 4. A walkout would hit just as retail season freight starts moving inland, on a market with little spare capacity.

The October intermodal report is out, and the volume showed up behind the reprice.
The InTek Intermodal Index averaged $1.23 a mile, its highest month since April 2024. Truckload on lanes over 750 miles rose with it to $2.07, and the spread widened to 84 cents. U.S. intermodal ran double digits year over year for three straight weeks, Cass shipments grew for a second month, and ACT now expects 2026 to be a record intermodal year.
Diesel came off the September record and still finished the month 70 percent above last year.
The constraint moved. J.B. Hunt and Schneider both said dray capacity, not rail, is what limits their growth, and I would agree. Schneider also announced it is moving its eastern rail business from CSX to Norfolk Southern effective January 1, with the UP-NS merger in the background.
The cycle model reads 66.5 percent, still Neutral and half a point below Strong, with direction Accelerating. The October 12 downturn check expired as expected, and a new truckload upturn signal now waits on intermodal for confirmation December 7. The word is caution.
Also in the report: the CSX systems outage, the BNSF washout in New Mexico, why intermodal is a program and not a spot product, and what shippers should be doing before the 2027 contract round.

Spot rates barely budged this week: intermodal +0.2%, truckload +0.3%. Diesel's climbing again, up 1.2% to $6.35/gal.
High fuel costs and the yearly rate gap keep intermodal the better pricing option.
