Spot rates minus fuel rose in every equipment type this week. Dry van is at $2.23/mile, reefer at $2.71 and flatbed at $2.61, up 0.5% to 1.3% on the week (minus fuel). Month-end and the start of peak retail season added demand, but posted trucks are still 22% to 26% below last year, and that’s what’s keeping rates high. Flatbed is the tightest board by far, with 41.7 loads posted for every truck.
One more to watch: a possible strike by about 250 ILWU watchmen at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach was pushed to Wednesday, November 4. A walkout would hit just as retail season freight starts moving inland, on a market with little spare capacity.
Are your lanes covered if the ports stall into peak season?

The October intermodal report is out, and the volume showed up behind the reprice.
The InTek Intermodal Index averaged $1.23 a mile, its highest month since April 2024. Truckload on lanes over 750 miles rose with it to $2.07, and the spread widened to 84 cents. U.S. intermodal ran double digits year over year for three straight weeks, Cass shipments grew for a second month, and ACT now expects 2026 to be a record intermodal year.
Diesel came off the September record and still finished the month 70 percent above last year.
The constraint moved. J.B. Hunt and Schneider both said dray capacity, not rail, is what limits their growth, and I would agree. Schneider also announced it is moving its eastern rail business from CSX to Norfolk Southern effective January 1, with the UP-NS merger in the background.
The cycle model reads 66.5 percent, still Neutral and half a point below Strong, with direction Accelerating. The October 12 downturn check expired as expected, and a new truckload upturn signal now waits on intermodal for confirmation December 7. The word is caution.
Also in the report: the CSX systems outage, the BNSF washout in New Mexico, why intermodal is a program and not a spot product, and what shippers should be doing before the 2027 contract round.

No one succeeds in intermodal alone.
That’s one of the lessons 2026 Silver Kingpin Award recipient Sam Niness shares in a special Freight Table conversation.
From his early days experimenting with intermodal service to helping shape innovations like EMP and Modal-X, Sam reflects on a career defined by change, collaboration and a willingness to keep trying — even when an idea didn’t work the first time.
He also shares a leadership principle that has stayed with him: empathy matters. In an industry built on partnerships, understanding how decisions affect others is essential to moving everyone forward. View here: hubs.li/Q04wN4bl0

Service is holding strong even as the volume turns up.
That's a key takeaway from the just-released Journal of Commerce scorecard covering the first half of 2026. Shipper satisfaction with intermodal service was 88%, off just a few points even as volumes soared. Full breakdown ⬇️

Warehouse space just got harder to find.
The Logistics Managers' Index posted its fastest growth in more than four years in June, and warehousing capacity swung back into contraction at the same time.
Retailers are front-loading inventory ahead of new tariffs expected later this month. Warehousing prices are already up 5.5 points year-over-year, and real estate data backs up the squeeze. New warehouse construction is on pace for its lowest level in a decade, even as demand climbs.
For shippers, the smartest move is likely to lock in space and rates now.
Is your warehouse contract still priced for last year's market?

Tariffs have a deadline, and importers are racing the clock⏱️
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle roughly a third of all U.S. containerized imports, and retailers are pulling cargo forward now to beat a tariff deadline, with most of it landing in LA first.
📦 A temporary 10% tariff expires July 24, with a second round of tariffs on Chinese and other imports lined up around the same deadline
📈 Combined port volume climbed 17% month over month in June, with imports from Northeast Asia up 16.5% year over year
🚛 Drayage, intermodal, and inbound van and reefer freight out of the LA basin are set for a hot run through July
🌊 July is on pace to set an all time record for U.S. container imports
If you're hauling freight out of the LA basin, Los Angeles is the market to watch this week👀

Two quotes with identical linehaul rates can land very differently.
The difference? Accessorial charges: detention, demurrage, per diem, chassis splits, storage.
They can add 15-30% to your total freight cost, so it's important to be prepared - and work with the right provider ⬇️
