The NDC government presented and promised a 24-hour economy as a deliberate policy intervention to ensure that businesses and public institutions to operate 24/7, in three shifts of eight (8) hours each which is estimated to create an additional estimated 1.8 million decent, sustainable and well paying jobs for Ghanaians.
According to Goosei Tannoh (Presidential Advisor for 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development), the NDC government’s 24-hour economy programme is estimated to cost USD 4billion .
Two budget cycles has elapsed and the government has only allocated GHS 110 million for 24-hour economy programme.
As it stands Ghanaians are yet to see substantial evidence of the jobs have been created under the 24-hour economy.
Moreover, recall that the 2026 budget promised to deliver 1,560,700 jobs. As it stands we’re yet to see substantial evidence of even one percent of the jobs that the 2026 sought to deliver.
As we prepare towards the 2027 budget reading, the Minister for Finance, Hon.Cassiel Ato Forson says the 2027 budget will unveil the details of the “New Economy” programme, a four-year investment plan valued at USD 10 billion which will run from 2027 to 2030 and is designed to expand domestic production, increase the share of Ghana’s raw materials processed locally and help Ghanaian firms sell more at home and abroad.
Yesterday the Ghana Statistical Service announced that Ghana's economy grew by six per cent in 2025, reaching GHS 1.4 trillion, but the expansion has not translated into the creation of enough decent jobs. Paper Economy it is.
According to the Ghana Statistical Service Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the first three quarters of 2025, national unemployment averaged 12.8 percent during the period, while unemployment among young people aged 15 to 35 averaged 21.9 percent, nearly twice the national rate.
The NDC government commits itself to yet another economic charade.
