EU enlargement offers the opportunity for a stronger, more stable Europe capable of shaping its own future.
The 2026 Enlargement Reports show that we are on track to achieving record progress this year, and how the path to the EU is becoming clearer for some of our candidate countries.
Today, we introduce roadmaps for the four countries that have made most reform progress in recent years.
For Montenegro, the roadmap charts a path towards signing its accession treaty as soon as June 2027.
For Albania, Moldova and Ukraine, the process is gaining momentum with clear priorities for the year ahead.
This progress shows that political will makes all the difference. The EU path remains open to all our candidates ready to make a similar choice.

🇲🇪🇪🇺 The European Commission’s positive assessment recognises the achievements of Montenegro’s diplomacy and provides fresh impetus for the decisive conclusion of EU 🇪🇺 accession negotiations.
➡️ The Report acknowledges very good progress in foreign, security and defence policy, continued 100% alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Montenegro’s active contribution to international peace and security.
#Montenegro remains a reliable EU neighbour, contributing to EU, @UN and @NATO missions and operations, demonstrating unwavering support for #Ukraine and strengthening cooperation with European partners.
➡️ These positive assessments are both recognition of our achievements and a renewed responsibility to intensify efforts towards our strategic goal: Montenegro’s membership in the European Union 🇪🇺 .
Montenegro in the EU by 2028: political slogan or realistic deadline?
"It's very much realistic, not just by Montenegro's standards but by those actually deciding," Montenegro's Ambassador to the EU @PetrusMarcus tells #EuropeToday.

A strong message from Podgorica: 🇦🇹🇨🇿🇸🇰 fully support Montenegro’s path towards full EU membership. 🇲🇪🇪🇺
Hosting the Foreign Ministers of the Slavkov Format (S3), DPM & FM @ErvinIbrahimov1 welcomed their unequivocal support for Montenegro as the frontrunner in the accession process and for a merit-based approach that leads to full-fledged EU membership.
The S3 partners praised Montenegro’s full alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and progress on visa policy, highlighting 🇲🇪 as a reliable European partner.
Montenegro’s successful accession would be a success for the entire Western Balkans and a strong signal that enlargement delivers when reforms deliver.
The message from our partners was clear: Montenegro can count on Austria, Czechia and Slovakia, and on the Slavkov Format, on its way to the EU.

Montenegro is now in the final stretch of its EU accession negotiations.
I had a call with Prime Minister @MickeySpajic to discuss the remaining steps.
To successfully conclude negotiations, it is crucial to preserve political unity and stability inside Montenegro, keep up the momentum to deliver the remaining reforms, and strengthen efforts to advance good neighbourly relations.
At Wallonia Festival held in the City of Namur, I met with dear colleagues ambasadors and with esteemed DPM&MFA🇧🇪 Maxime Prevot.
