🔍Why do we ignore self-relevant feedback?
In our new review, we argue it's not that we don’t care—we just really like the version of ourselves we already believe in.

Why is it so hard to truly know ourselves — especially morally? A new review by @m_burghart and @IsabelThielmann says self-knowledge has limits, but shows that feedback can help us grow 🌱🔍

You want to learn more about the science of dishonesty? Check out our most recent review, led by the great Shaul Shalvi! And what a privilege to work with such a wonderful crowd!
I'm honored to be among the authors of this article on the "science of honesty".
We review research from the past decades and point towards important avenues for future work.
We argue that although much is known about honesty in isolated, low-risk contexts, there is an urgent need to study honesty in more complex, realistic settings. These settings include those involving interpersonal relationships, potential sanctions, or group influences.
We identify 66 open research questions that we find most promising to explore.
We hope that this piece will become a useful resource for students and researchers.

Have you ever been dishonest on your tax return? Would a written “oath of honesty” that you had to sign have stopped you? Yes, that is likely, says a group of 42 international scientists in a mega-study with over 21,000 participants. #psychology 👉csl.mpg.de/726211/an-oath-ag…
How consistent is (dis)honest behavior? And is honesty a trait? Our new paper suggests yes! Dishonest behavior was pretty consistent across 3 years, and personality traits can predict this consistency.

🚀Now out in @NatureHumBehav 🚀
How can we reduce dishonest behavior in a tax evasion game?
A classic method is through honesty oaths. But… do all honesty oaths work the same?
To answer this question, we adopted a mega-study approach, testing 21 different honesty oaths on more than 20.000 people.
The results are quite surprising: both experts and laypeople failed to predict the most effective interventions.
Some oaths worked, others didn’t. The most effective oath almost halved tax evasion.
So, which oath was it?
It was one that highlighted specific behavior:
“I hereby declare that I will provide honest information when reporting my final income from the sorting task.”
