Black women have been enormously important to the WNBA.
Black queer women have been enormously important to the WNBA.
Nobody is denying that.
But apparently somebody needs to explain this:
IMPORTANT ≠ OWNERSHIP.
You don’t get to minimize every straight woman, white woman, owner, executive, coach, fan, sponsor and player who helped build this league because you’ve decided YOUR demographic deserves the loudest microphone.
And you DAMN SURE don’t get to imply:
“WE BUILT IT.
WE’RE THE MAJORITY.
WE DECIDE WHAT INCLUSION MEANS.
EVERYBODY ELSE FALL IN LINE.”

Your RACE doesn’t make your opinion law.
Your SEXUALITY doesn’t make your argument untouchable.
Being the MAJORITY doesn’t give you intellectual ownership over everybody else.

So spare me this idea that one particular demographic gets to plant a flag in the middle of the WNBA and declare:
“THIS IS OUR LEAGUE.”
No.
YOU HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE.

YOU DESERVE RESPECT AT THE TABLE.

The empty podium spot and look on these girls’ faces says it all. This needs to stop.
For two years in a row, high school athlete Lauren Matthew came in 2nd to a male in the WA State GIRLS 400m State Track Championship.
Here is the empty 2nd podium spot where she refused to stand the second year, and her holding a sign that says she is the real state champion.
