Northern Ireland remaining in the EU single market for goods means we have an entire region running as a counterfactual on how much wealthier we’d have been had we stayed. It’s actually outperformed London.

A big talking point of climate change skeptics is “…but the 1930s were hot!” It’s true. They are right. 1930s summers were super hot in the US! But zoom out, and most of the globe was not. Top image: 1930s global temp anomalies, compared to… Bottom image: the last 10 years with warm orange colors everywhere. While the 1930s were indeed a relatively warm decade, they are no comparison to recent times, as the pace of human driven climate heating has far surpassed the pace of natural cycles - actually it’s about 10X faster than natural due to greenhouse heating from fossil fuel burning, land use changes, and variations in air pollution, plus climate feedbacks. A note about the 1930s in the US. It was the Dust Bowl… a phenomenon caused by the intersection of a natural dry cycle in the US Plains and also horrible farming practices with the mass plowing of native Prairie grass. This resulted in incredibly hot summers in which many US heat records still stand today. Contrary to denial talking points, the 1930s in the US are further proof that us humans, even in the small numbers of the 1930s Plains, can have a profound impact on the climate.

📽️It's a deal! But how big a deal is the one just unveiled between the UK and the EU? In numerical terms, at least, possibly not quite as big as Keir Starmer might want you to believe. Here's my primer on what just got announced today 👇

This is quite concerning. Charts showing rain total forecasts for next 16 days, little to rain for many. Parts of eastern and southern Scotland are at 21-23 days straight of no rain days. If this verifies, we could be pushing 40 days in some spots. Very unlike Scotland!

Across Europe, regional sea levels are rising at an average rate of 2–4 mm per year. Mean sea level change is a critical indicator of climate change. The visualization by @NASA shows changes using the metaphor of a submerged porthole. #ESOTC2024 report: bit.ly/3Gbw023

Thanks for kind comments. Just to confirm: Alfie's away but, as a pathetic free-loading European type, hasn't yet left the cult. Not sure where he is - might have nipped across to Greenland, just to do a quick tour of its security facilities to check everything's cool with them😎
Here’s a song about #Signalgate – the flamboyant US security breach – adapted from one of our all-time fave @BeeGeesOfficial songs, titled “You Were Not Supposed to Message it Through!” A quick turnaround, but only 5 of us as Alfie (really our best fake Bee Gee) away 🔥👊💪🙏🎶

This is "I Put Up Tariffs" 🎶- perhaps the first ever parody song (?) to make reference to the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930. It's based on #BobMarley's legendary "I Shot the Sheriff" and sung from the point of view of #Trump, unleashing his frenzy of #tariffs on the USA & the world.
