This is how we are able to encode to high quality BC7, ASTC, ETC1, etc. in real-time on a web page without requiring SIMD or threading. (Our geospatial users are quite conservative.) If you're not using AI on encoders like this, I think you're going to be left behind.
The GPU texture search problem was solved earlier this year, with AI assistance on the mathematics, modelling and design. Otherwise shipping usable ASTC encoders that support 1,000's of modes wouldn't be practical.
Binomial's latest ASTC and BC7 encoders use these techniques, but I kept it quiet.
I call them "analytical" encoders. They model the quantization noise throughout the decoder. These techniques allow us to rapidly estimate encoding error on 1,000's of modes using simple formulas.
