I’m sure most of you have seen the tsunami of anti-legalization tweets flooding X. Clearly a coordinated effort-which, ironically often signals something big (and positive) is about to happen on the cannabis policy front. We all know what that is. But let me address the "weed is bad, so keep it criminal" crowd:
I agree-cannabis presents real risks for adolescents, and preventing youth access must be central to any federal cannabis policy. But the debate isn't about whether to protect minors. It's about which framework actually works.
The evidence does not show that legalization increases teen use. Several studies suggest the opposite. Where data shows higher reported use post-legalization, the most plausible explanation is improved survey candor-less fear of legal consequences means more honest answers.
What is firmly established: decades of prohibition have completely FAILED to prevent youth access, reduce consumption, or ensure product safety-while creating unregulated markets, empowering criminal enterprises, and inflicting disproportionate, multi-generational harm on minority communities.
A public health regulatory model-age restrictions, enforcement against unlicensed sales, product safety standards, education, and accountability-is far better aligned with protecting youth. Notably, the loudest prohibition voices on X seem disconnected from the communities most harmed by these policies and conveniently ignore the issue entirely.
Protecting children requires evidence-based regulation, not reflexive reliance on a framework that failed to protect them while devastating entire communities. If you don't want your kids to consume cannabis, ultimately it starts at home. If you really want to reduce underage access and promote safe, responsible consumption (all of which are a good ideas), then pretending criminal enforcement works won't get you there - but sensible regulation will. This is why we need to “legalize” cannabis by decriminalizing and regulating it.

The DEA has released its updated report confirming what advocates and researchers have pointed out for years: there has never been a reported cannabis overdose death. Meanwhile, the CDC reports about 178,000 people die from excessive drinking each year. marijuanamoment.net/there-ar…

DEA brief to DEA Judge...
"Marijuana can no longer remain in Schedule I because it no longer satisfies two of the three statutory requirements of 21 U.S.C. § 812(b)." (p. 49)
"The vast majority of individuals who use marijuana do so in a manner that does not result in dangers to themselves or to their communities." (p. 9)
"Consistently across databases, across drugs and over time, marijuana has shown fewer adverse outcomes than heroin and alcohol and has been ranked consistently last when compared to other substances for overdose causing death." (p. 9)
"38 states have established regulatory regimes that have allowed over 30,000 doctors to treat more than six million patients." (p. 49)
"The Opposed Parties' arguments have no merit." (p. 2)

Time for Governor Hochul to sign that anti-inversion bill sitting on her desk…⏰
The Greece Police Department, OCM and law enforcement partners confiscated more than $17 million in illicit cannabis products, removing them from the streets. This is the largest joint enforcement operation OCM has participated in to date.

This will look familiar to anyone involved in the rollout of the NY cannabis industry…I see shades of DASNY’s CAURD program (yikes 😬).
Replying to @nickkokonas
NYC chooses and pays for the design, equipment, refrigeration and fitout. The operator pays utilities, maintenance, cleaning and security. So NYC makes the capital decisions while someone else pays for the consequences.
That's how they control the goalposts.
Another uptick in coordinated anti-cannabis posting on X this week from the usual under-informed and self-interested crowd who prefer to see minorities in prison over allowing adults to make their own decisions on consuming a plant. (Always an indication that we’re close to a major positive breakthrough on legalization).
Instead of listening to blind propaganda, let’s take a look at the facts from our own government.
HHS’s own federal cannabis review found:
- Alcohol withdrawal can cause “seizures and even death.” (Cannabis, in contrast, stops and prevents seizures 👀)
- Alcohol produced nearly 3 million annual ER visits, versus ~ 800K for cannabis (the latter primarily bc we don’t have federal standards for THC limits and product labeling, which can only be solved by….you guessed right…legalize it!)
- Alcohol caused approximately 1.8 million annual hospitalizations. 🏥
- Alcohol produced 1,338 single-substance overdose deaths. ☠️
HHS stated that adverse-outcome rankings typically place “alcohol or heroin” at or near the top, cannabis ranking at or near the bottom. 💉📉
That is the federal government’s own scientific record—not industry propaganda.
This you, bro? @chamath nobody’s making you smoke weed. If you think it’s disgusting, then stay away from it. You have no business telling people what to not put in their bodies while encouraging them to consume alcohol.
Love the podcast but this is a bad look. Stop talking your book for once.
Went to @FanaticsFest for second year. This year was bigger, much easier to enter and they weaved the card show into experiences very well this year. It’s a sports fan show, with a card show embedded. Not a card show, like the National. Feels like a pre-IPO roadshow for Fanatics.
The high-end card market is very, very healthy. 10% of the industry represents 90% of the value.
Sport legends’ cards seem specifically to be going parabolic over the past few months. I’m not sure if it’s a “flight to safety” or more investors generally acknowledging high end cards as an alternative asset class like art or memorabilia. Or both.
Beyond the athlete celebrities, the number of breakers, investors and dealers with “celeb” status was very noticeable this year. Shows how truly big the sports card industry has become.
Too much Pokémon. Sorry, it’s a sports event. Pokémon is the reason PSA is a mess. 🤷🏻♂️
As it turns out, the exactly OPPOSITE is true. Discriminatory de-banking of state-licensed businesses simply bc federal law has been slow to catch up with the reality of science has RESULTED in actual criminals leveraging the industry to wash money from actual criminal activity. If you want to shut that spigot off (which most agree on), the effective solution is to let the licensed industry bank.
Sunlight is the greatest of disinfectants.
This is true today with cannabis as it was for alcohol during prohibition. Among other reasons, Americans grew tired of organized crime, and ending prohibition was one of the solutions.
Giving #SAFEBanking access to pot companies gives drug cartels more power.
