Good to see Labour & Lib dems include explicit mention of #SuicidePrevention in manifestos, w some key commitments in line w @samaritans policy asks. No mention of SP from Tories, despite commitment to reducing rates in the National Strategy <a yr ago. shorturl.at/Q3VCA

Important to see @SajidJavid speak about suicide prevention on World Mental Health Day, and his tragic experience of losing his brother. He's calling on Government to stay committed to a 10-year suicide prevention plan in England and so are we (1/2)
"I still think whether there's anything I could have done to save his life" The former Health Secretary Sajid Javid talks to @amolrajan about his brother Tariq who took his own life in 2018, on World Mental Health Day Full interview: bbc.in/3s1BeDj | #R4Today

📣Update: The UK Government confirmed yesterday that suicide and self-harm content will be included in the Online Safety Bill as priority 'legal but harmful' content for adults and children. It’s a big step in the right direction. But there is still a long way for us to go...🧵
Decisions made today by the UK Government mean that anyone over 18 won’t be protected from all harmful suicide or self-harm content on most sites across the internet. This isn’t good enough. Everyone deserves to be safe online - we’ll keep going until they are. #OnlineSafetyBill

As part of our campaign for a kinder, safer internet we want to protect anyone who’s being encouraged to harm themselves online. But what does this look like in reality? 👇 1/4

How can we estimate suicide risk in relation to gambling? Key paper is this led by @McManusSally. Suicidal thoughts & actions rather than suicide but national study (England) of general population, not patients. Take home: 3-fold increase. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Important paper in @JAMAPsych - all this movement for machine learning to help predict #suicide using health and other routine data sources is deeply problematic. Likely to widen existing inequalities and increase harm. Many minority ethnic groups are missing or misclassified.
Clinical use of #suicide prediction models may widen racial and ethnic disparities in #mentalhealth. Improving predictive performance, and interventions guided by prediction models, for underserved populations should be prioritized to improve #healthequity ja.ma/3dTNw9T

This week’s national #suicideprevention advisory group will focus on #ethnicity. Longstanding problem of what is recorded at inquest but we need more than this, need every population database to reliably record ethnicity: housing, education, benefits, NHS, justice, mortality.
