side note. tether holds ~$123B in t-bills (more than Saudi Arabia or South Korea hold in total treasuries) foreign central banks have cut their t-bill holdings ~25% over the past year, while private onchain dollar demand is rapidly growing this used to be routed through central banks, but is now increasingly routed through software, where people who want digital dollars indirectly become buyers of us debt with no sovereign in between tldr this makes public blockchains part of how the us finances itself, making them a national interest
no one gives a fuck about crypto btw timeline completely overrates it as an issue on a larger scale bc it was in a previous post-FTX cycle where they needed to save face the dems are much more interested in the blatant corruption and war crimes than internet money regulation imo. they are what wins them the next election and that's all governments ever care about if crypto is attacked it will be the part that should be attacked which is the obvious scams that trump n co extracted from some exceptions but i think sensible regulation > mass extraction has to be bullish mid-long term crypto

This should be a major wakeup call for all my conservative friends who think that the average American equates stock market performance to their quality of life. Americans care about the promises made that were not kept, we're in foreign wars which have lead to increased costs to their everyday lives. The technocratic ruling class has attempted to manufacture compliance and broad acceptance of AI while telling everyone they're going to lose their job or die. I'm optimistic for the future of this country and respect the majority of Americans voicing their opinion.

Today we’re releasing suicide-memory-bench v01.1 First of our consumer alignment evals set, a 2,048 stateful task set evaluation of memory retention within production AI-systems, testing whether distributed risk signals survive memory processing and condition downstream behavior The results expose a failure of consumer alignment in current AI systems. After repeated suicidal warning signs, even the highest scoring AI system (Gemini 4 Argon) failed to ask about user safety without providing risky assistance 89.8% of the time.

love how heads in crypto are like: "yeah the future of finance is actually an interface where you have to tell an LLM that you want to buy BTC instead of just clicking the buy button" beautiful UI tho
unironically the future of finance...

There’s 100% a kind of mania you can get into with coding agents, where it feels like you’re getting a lot done and working all the time but nothing is really happening. I think it's often a form of avoidance of something else in life.

no good "agentic" trading products exist (yet!!) for a number of reasons. primarily, all of them put the llm in the trading loop. when u look at the firms/ppl making money with llms (eg jane st is a top-10 anthropic customer), you see that they use them to do research and write the trading algos rather than executing the strategies themselves why: 1. llms are slow. every unit of inference latency is paid for in yield 2. agents are fantastic "allocators" and terrible executors. judgment (e.g. determining edge) rewards reasoning, but execution rewards determinism and speed 3. data is everything in trading and the majority of these tools give you shitty cheap / free / delayed data 4. every existing harness polls on a timer whereas markets move on events so anything that happens between polls = a potential missed trade ultimately, the model should be doing the research and writing the strategy, but ultimately, code should execute it (in the majority of cases) these platforms all take a cut above exchange fees + run ur strategy out of a cloud region nowhere near the exchange, so your agent/strategy reacts to stale prices as a result, a potentially profitable strategy will fail on these platforms for structural reasons and users will churn

Robots are getting better at completing tasks. But what happens when they make a mistake? We fine-tuned π₀.₅ on two real-world manipulation tasks to showcase whether recovery demonstrations can improve policy reliability more effectively than additional successful demonstrations. 🧵

MAYBE I WAS WRONG ABOUT BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY I wrote about how I always used to make fun of the guys who said things like "Bitcoin is speculative, but the underlying blockchain technology is interesting." And now I think maybe they kinda had a point.

May 5, 1945. Hitler has been dead for five days. The war in Europe is almost over. In a castle in the Austrian Alps, American soldiers, German soldiers, and a group of elderly French prisoners grab rifles and get ready to fight the SS. Together. The castle was called Schloss Itter. The Nazis had turned it into a prison for very important people. Not ordinary prisoners. Trophies. Inside were two former prime ministers of France, Paul Reynaud and Édouard Daladier. Two of France's top generals, Maxime Weygand and Maurice Gamelin. A famous tennis champion, Jean Borotra. And the older sister of Charles de Gaulle. As the Reich collapsed in early May, the SS guards panicked and ran. The prisoners suddenly found themselves in charge of a castle, with weapons left behind, and a serious problem. Waffen-SS units were still roaming the area. Fanatics who would gladly kill them all. They needed help. Fast. One of the castle's prisoners, a Yugoslav handyman, slipped out on a bicycle to find the Americans. Separately, a German army officer named Major Josef Gangl also went looking for them. Gangl was a Wehrmacht officer who had turned against the Nazis and was secretly working with the Austrian resistance. He wanted to protect the prisoners too. He found an American tank commander named Captain Jack Lee. Lee was 27, tough, cigar chewing, and willing to do something insane. With a single Sherman tank and a handful of American soldiers, he drove up into the mountains alongside Gangl and a few of his German troops. They reached the castle on May 4. The French prisoners were not exactly thrilled to see a tiny rescue force. They had expected an army. Instead they got a few Americans, a few Germans, and one tank. The next morning, the SS attacked. Somewhere between 100 and 150 Waffen-SS troops hit the castle with machine guns, mortars, and anti-tank weapons. The defenders fought back from the walls and windows. Americans and Germans side by side. The French prisoners refused to hide. Some of them, including Reynaud, picked up weapons and joined in. The Sherman tank was knocked out. The defenders were running out of ammunition. It looked like the castle would fall. Then Jean Borotra, the tennis star, volunteered to make a run for it. He jumped the wall, slipped past the SS, and sprinted through the countryside to find American reinforcements. He found them. And he insisted on coming back with them to finish the fight. During the battle, Major Gangl saw Paul Reynaud exposed to gunfire and moved to pull him to safety. A sniper shot Gangl dead. He had survived the whole war as a German soldier, only to die defending French prisoners from the SS in its final days. That afternoon, the American relief force arrived and broke the attack. The SS were scattered and captured. The prisoners were saved. Jack Lee received the Distinguished Service Cross. In Austria, Josef Gangl is remembered as a hero, and a street is named after him. It is believed to be the only battle of the war where American and German soldiers fought together on the same side.

interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/
