Not surprised by these numbers. Voters switch off when parties become obsessed with internal ideological rows. We should be fighting for homes, lower bills, better public services and climate action.

How can the BBC invest in a headquarters in Digbeth, yet consider moving The Archers out of Brum? When we secured that investment, losing shows was never part of the plan. After 75 years, it is part of the WM's heritage. The BBC must reconsider. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crpd…

I hope every child lucky enough to have grandparents or older relatives asks them about their childhoods. I know I did all the time. My grandma (born 1921) told me the story of her first piano lesson. She was from Leicester and knocked on the door of the eminent organist William Snow (father of CP Snow). A maid answered. My grandma explained why she was there. The maid replied, 'And who should I say is calling?'. In a panic, my grandma gave the wrong name: 'My name is Eileen but everyone calls me Mary'. This wasn't true, but she told me she was so nervous that she just blurted it out. Mr Snow agreed to take her on, and taught her for many years. She later became a piano teacher herself, continuing to teach up to her 90th birthday. William Snow always called her Mary -- the only person to do so. I asked her about CP Snow, and she said he was at university but used to come back to visit. He was in his early 20s. This incident took place in 1927 -- nearly a century ago. And this tweet is the first time the memory has been written down! – at Faringdon, England
I’m sixty five. As a boy I knew some extremely old people who occasionally reminisced about old people they had known when they were themselves young. It’s surprising how far back one can go with eyewitness testimony on that basis. For example my grandmother (b 1883) saw the Diamond Jubilee procession of 1897 and told me about it often enough for it still to seem like a recent event to me now. More curious, Lawrie Tanner (b. 1890) lived in Westminster School where his father was a housemaster. As a boy he knew an old man who remembered shooting snipe on what is now Vincent Square. That takes one back to about 1840, say 185 years. Now there’s a point to this and it concerns the memory of the early Church. Irenaeus, writing in about the year 180, wrote that as a boy he had known Polycarp, who knew the Apostle John personally.

BBC Radio 3's Choral Evensong programme will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special broadcast live from the Abbey on Wednesday 7 October. The service will be sung by @WAbbeyChoir, conducted by Organist & Master of the Choristers Andrew Nethsingha. It will include music by Howells and Parry, whose repertoire has featured prominently over the last 100 years, together with the world premier of an introit composed especially for the occasion by Kerensa Briggs. Apart from a short break in 1970, Choral Evensong has been broadcast every week since its very first transmission. That service was live on the National Programme from Westminster Abbey on Thursday 7 October 1926. Even during the war years Choral Evensong maintained its position in the schedules - although for two years from 1940 to 1942 the venues were not revealed by Radio Times and the programme was listed simply as coming from 'a Public School Chapel' or 'a Western or Northern Cathedral'. Over 80 different cathedrals, churches and chapels have since been visited. Listeners in the UK can hear Wednesday's service live on Radio 3 or on demand for 30 days on BBC Sounds. It will also be repeated on Radio 3 at 6pm (BST) on Sunday 11 October. Find out more: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m003215…

In terms of the comments about this debacle unfolding under a female Archbishop, it's also worth noting that the nomination of Ashrafi happened before her time in office. That doesn't excuse a lack of due diligence but I think it's worth saying for the record.

This is horrendous: charity facing bankruptcy because an American couldn’t take their dog into a cafe & is suing them… using Legal Aid. Don’t you have to have a certain financial back up to immigrate to Scotland? How does that square with claiming legal aid?

I'm on my way to #Morecambe, where far-right Christian Nationalists are gathering for their #MakeGreatBritainChristianAgain conference. I'll join with other inclusive Christians *outside* the conference to reject the far-right as we pray & witness to the inclusive love of #Jesus.
This weekend, I'll be in #Morecambe with other inclusive Christians to pray, witness and challenge a vile #ChristianNationalist conference, which is peddling far-right doctrine under the name 'Make Great Britain Christian Again'. Here's why I'm going.

There’s no excuse for @andyburnham, @lisanandy and @RichParkerLab not to call an end to Glenbrook Property’s destruction of what was the UK’s oldest working cinema… They could literally knock on Glenbrook’s front door next time they’re at No. 10 North…

Archbishop Elia (Wallgren) of Helsinki and All Finland criticized Patriarch Kirill of Moscow's sermon that the Soviet atomic bomb was created in Sarov "by the grace and mercy of God" and partly thanks to the prayers of St. Seraphim of Sarov. "The patriarch's speech is not theology, but a political agenda," Archbishop Elia emphasized. He called the use of St. Seraphim of Sarov's name to bless weapons of mass destruction horrific: the saint preached love, forgiveness, and humility, while a nuclear bomb brings death to thousands. The archbishop stated that Kirill had effectively put theology at the service of the Russian state. "Orthodox nuclear weapons" do not exist: the Church prays for peace for the entire world, not for the victory of one country's weapons, the head of the Finnish Orthodox Church reiterated.
Patriarch Kirill called the development of nuclear weapons in the USSR "the grace and mercy of God." Moscow Patriarch Kirill called the Soviet Union's development of nuclear weapons in Sarov a divine plan. He made this statement on August 1 after the liturgy at the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery. The monastery was founded in the 18th century. From 1778 to 1833, the famous Russian saint, St. Seraphim of Sarov, lived there. In 1927, the communist authorities closed the monastery, and St. Seraphim's relics were transported to a museum in Moscow, and then to Leningrad. In 1946, the Soviet authorities established the highly classified KB-11 nuclear weapons development facility in the monastery itself. "The scientists who worked here in Sarov created our Russian atomic bomb, which stopped the enemy's plans to destroy and enslave our Fatherland. Thus, through the work of the scientists, engineers, and workers who labored here, God's grace and mercy were bestowed upon our country," the Russian Orthodox Church's official website quotes the patriarch as saying. Since 2022, Russian authorities have regularly threatened Ukraine and the countries that support it with the use of nuclear weapons.

The broadcast interviewers imploring ministers ‘Why couldn’t you make an exception for this one case that’s caused so much public concern?’ should receive the answer: I’m sorry, that’s not fair and it’s not how policy works.

What was the UK’s oldest working cinema. Glenbrook Property are intentionally letting it rot aren’t they? Is this the welcome visitors to #birmingham2026 should see when they arrive at New Street Station? Thoughts @RichParkerLab? Does it scream 2nd City or second class?
