💥 EXC: Labour MPs are calling for greater parity between mayoral & non-mayoral areas, as the County Councils Network warns Burnham’s devolution drive could create a country of ‘urban haves’ and ‘rural have nots’ ⬇️ Labour MPs are growing restless - one tells me there is a ‘bias’ towards mayoral areas 🧵

The BBC has a fascinating, broken relationship with commercial media - constantly taking its cues from an industry where most of the business models are in a long-term death spiral, and replicating their shoddy content, despite facing none of those constraints itself.

EXC: 📄Leaked doc on Andy Burnham's devolution plans, discussed on Politics at Sam and Anne's this morning here: youtu.be/NTGgXoo2a5U?si=Ctbm…. 👀But is it credibly "the largest package of financial powers ever offered to English mayors” as the PM claimed in July? 😮This document sets out how business rates could be devolved to Mayors, in a plan to be unveiled in the Budget 🔬But it's a VERY small amount of cash at stake. What they’re actually doing is withdrawing specific central government grants, and replacing them with business rate retention, but critically, initially to the same value initially, so it’s revenue neutral. Almost all additional income is clawed back through a Treasury tariff. 📅 There could be more money in future - but the leaked doc slides offer mayors 20% of business rates +growth+ over a baseline AND subject to a clawback levy. So we’re talking in future about tens, maybe only single digit millions. 🙀One mayor tells me this plan is much less ambitious than Burnham promised earlier and lobbied hard as a mayor

The Fuel Finder app is a great sign of how slow government moves on the simplest things. We're 1,193 days on since Jeremy Hunt said the government was "taking swift steps following the CMA’s recommendations". A timeline: ⏳3 July 2023 - CMA publishes review calling for an app to give live prices. Sunak govt agrees to implement it as "the latest step in the government’s action to ease the cost of living". ⏳16 Jan 2024 - DESNZ launches 8 week consultation. ⏳May 2024 - Legislation needed to force data sharing falls when election called. ⏳30 Oct 2024 - Govt publishes outcome of the Jan consulation and aims to launch "by the end of 2025". ⏳19 June 2025 - Data (Use and Access) Bill gets royal assent. ⏳17 Dec 2025 - Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025 laid before Parliament. ⏳2 Feb 2026 - Petrol stations legally required to report their fuel prices. ⏳8 Oct 2026 - Burnham announces the data is available through Google Maps to help with the cost of living.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

Kemi Badenoch tells BBC's Today programme: "We are not building the Iron Dome." Asked whether calling it the Iron Dom was just for front page headlines, she replies: "We didn't call it it the Iron Dome, we called it the Britannia Sheild. You'll have to speak to the newspapers about that." Conservative party press release 👇

EXC: Leaked internal Lib Dem document which spelt out advantages of ditching triple lock - and discusses alternatives - seized on by Lib Dem MP critics of Ed Davey With @LucyJMcDaid 🔥We’ve been handed internal LD analysis by the treasury team that spells out pros and cons of ditching the Triple Lock, ahead of their conference. But Lib Dems tell me the doc demonstrates how the triple lock is a bad policy that doesn’t help pensioner poverty (because there are much better ways of doing it) and directly contradicts Ed Davey who said it was about pensioner poverty. Read extracts and make up your own mind A revolt is growing in Lib Dem’s on this as more MPs come out publicly after Tom Gordon yesterday Read : news.sky.com/share/13594253
