My granda, whose celebrations at Ibrox won him a lot of fans over the years, sadly passed away today at 94 following a long battle with vascular dementia. He was my hero.
This is a personal piece I’ve written about my granda. He’s 88 and still has a season ticket at Ibrox. He lives for going to watch Rangers but without that to keep his mind active I’ve noticed a decline. I wish I could tell him he could go back soon. theathletic.com/1864349

Football kept his brain ticking and is part of the reason why he never forgot us, even in the difficult final months.
Vascular dementia means that sometimes a visit ends with you leaving demoralised as you feel you’re losing your granda in front of your eyes. Then he watches Rangers win 3-0, recites the Iron Curtain team from the 1940’s & he’s brimming with life. Football is an amazing drug 💙

A snippet of why everyone loved him
Think my granda enjoyed Ibrox tonight. I’m told he was putting out his hand for high fives as people walked up the stairs at the end of the game.

Hearts progressing is a great result for Scottish football. Rapid Wien a level of side that our clubs usually don’t come through. Great to see so many Scottish players in the team too.

I thought I’d seen it all with officiating up here but this is genuinely beyond belief. The standard is so poor it’s laughable.
"That is madness...he's running with the ball!" 🗣️ @mstewart_23 was not a fan of that VAR intervention for mistaken identity 🟨

For the first time in a decade, the Premier League season kicks off without Pep Guardiola, a visionary coach who changed the fabric of English football at all levels. We spoke to 10 managers to tell some of their favourite stories about meeting him, including: 🔹 How he got one old-school boss to give his City players a team talk 🔹 When lunch turned into a tactical lesson, with wineglasses as players 🔹 How he would know every last detail about lower league opponents 🔹 The coach who rates him "up there with Slash form Guns and Roses" 📝 @JordanC1107 🔗 nyti.ms/4wHlHHy
