We made a short video to explain the findings of these papers to a lay audience. This was arguably harder than publishing the actual papers.

While many of you have heard of the microbiome which describes the bacteria in our body, have you heard of the #mycobiome? This refers to the fungi that can be found in our gut as well as in tumors. In a recent report in @Cancer_Cell, investigators found that the fungus Aspergillus sydowii could be found in human lung adenocarcinomas and correlated with a worsened outcome. In experimental mouse models of lung cancer, this organism induced the tumor infiltration of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) which inhibited tumor reactive T cells. These findings may allow us to improve outcomes in cancer patients by targeting specific fungi.

#ScienceSaturday CD8+ T cells classically kill tumor cells by recognition of peptide antigens in the context of class I MHC molecules, and downregulation or loss of class I expression can lead to tumor escape. @EmilyCLerner et al have now shown that CD8+ T cells can kill class I negative tumor cells through the receptor NKG2D, paving the way for strategies to neutralize this escape mechanism.
