Regardless of who wins South Carolina's U.S. Senate race on November 3, one thing is already painfully clear: The Graham political establishment has exposed a division that will not magically disappear when the polls close. For decades, grassroots conservatives have been told the same thing: Fight your battles in the primaries. Accept the results. Hold your nose. Vote for the lesser of two evils. Support the nominee. We'll demand accountability next time. And for decades, many of us did exactly that. We knocked on doors. Made thousands of telephone calls. Raised money. Organized rallies. Defended candidates we had serious reservations about. All because we were told the alternative would be worse. AND WHERE HAS THAT ENDLESS CYCLE OF POLITICAL COMPROMISE GOTTEN US? Now consider what happened in South Carolina. After enormous outside spending, powerful political endorsements, and a bitter Republican runoff, Darline Graham secured the nomination over Ralph Norman. I ACCEPTED THE RUNOFF RESULTS. I DID NOT ACCEPT AN OBLIGATION TO VOTE FOR THE WINNER. Apparently, that distinction is intolerable to some within the Republican establishment. And the backlash has been extraordinary. We've been called sore losers, traitors, idiots, Democrats, communists, election deniers, and political saboteurs. I've personally been told to leave South Carolina, return to Connecticut, and even move to Cuba or Venezuela. All because I refuse to surrender my independent judgment at the ballot box. STOP AND CONSIDER THE STAGGERING HYPOCRISY. The very people who claim to defend individual liberty, constitutional government, freedom of conscience, and personal responsibility are now ridiculing fellow conservatives for exercising those principles. They demand unity while practicing exclusion. They demand loyalty while demonstrating contempt. They demand our votes while insulting the very people whose support they desperately seek. THAT ISN'T UNITY. THAT'S POLITICAL ENTITLEMENT. And now comes the familiar warning: "Your write-in votes could cost Republicans the Senate seat!" Yes, divided votes can affect elections. I understand the mathematics and the consequences. I've never pretended otherwise. But here's the question almost nobody in the establishment wants to confront: WHY HAS EARNING OUR VOTES BECOME LESS IMPORTANT THAN DEMANDING THEM? I've opposed the Graham political establishment since 2007. My convictions did not begin with Ralph Norman's Senate campaign, and they will not expire on November 3. This isn't about refusing to accept defeat. It's about refusing to accept the proposition that winning a party nomination gives anyone ownership of my conscience. And if the establishment believes it can simply insult, threaten, ridicule, and shame constitutional conservatives back into submission, it has profoundly misunderstood the people it has alienated. YOU CANNOT SPEND YEARS BURNING BRIDGES AND THEN DEMAND THAT THE PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE CROSS THEM TO SAVE YOU. Whatever happens Tuesday, the political consequences of this division deserve serious examination. Because the fundamental issue extends well beyond one Senate seat, one candidate, or one election.
