It may be that Marxism and Islam, like Leto II's long plan to teach mankind to knock out the "key log", are necessary oppressions for a time, to teach us fully to despise lies and cruelty and tyranny. But I don't think I'll vote for them this year.

There was once a shepherd who found a wolf caught in a snare at the edge of his pasture.
The wolf begged to be freed.
“I was hungry,” it said. “That is all. Spare me, and I will remember your mercy!”
The shepherd cut the rope.
The next night, three lambs were gone.
Again the shepherd found the wolf. Again it pleaded. Again the shepherd convinced himself that mercy was proof of his goodness.
By winter, half the flock was dead.
An old farmer finally asked him, “Why do you keep freeing it?”
The shepherd answered, “Because I refuse to become cruel.”
The farmer looked at the empty field and said, “Then understand what you have done. You were not merciful to the wolf. You were cruel to everything that trusted you to keep them safe.”
That’s the lesson.
Mercy without judgment isn’t virtue. When someone openly intends to destroy what has been entrusted to you, endless forgiveness doesn’t make you righteous. It makes everyone behind you pay for your vanity.
A bit of World War II history, a bit of film history, and a bit of Grand Theft Auto history!

It's good for the sheepdog to love the sheep, but he can't think as the sheep think. And if the sheep arrange their world to be hostile to the sheepdogs... why wouldn't they revert to wolves eventually? For honor that will never be even grudgingly acknowledged?
Jade Empire was the one game they made that I really loved and they didn't even mention it. Oh well. No institutional memory, I guess... which was kinda obvious from the last three games.
Yesterday when I read my time entries at work, one ended in .50 and I thought I'd done something wrong. It took a moment to realize it was just a half hour. I saw .50 instead of .5 and thought of it as minutes instead of a fraction of an hour. Minds are weird.
Well, well, this "chess pie" sounds rather intriguing. xitter.gq/i/grok/share/c2hhcmQtN…
I'm planning to use a hot plate next weekend and now I'm going to put a plate in my plate so I can heat while I heat.

The fact that this idea is universally rejected by academic philosophers seems a very good argument that it may be true.

Sunday is a good day for pondering metaphysics.

Google can't seem to find that one, but found one from the last book: "All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible." (cont)
(Spoilers for Children of Dune) I'm enjoying the Dune novels--even more than I expected, being in my youth a bit put off by the "weirdness" of the second book--but from a plotting standpoint, this part seemed to come out of nowhere.
