In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course. He never told him and the boy didn’t find out until decades later. By then, he was a knight, that little boy’s name was Patrick Stewart. He was born into a poor family in Mirfield, a small mill town in Yorkshire and his father came home from World War II a violent man, and he was violent toward Patrick’s mother. Young Patrick learned exactly when to step between his father’s fist and his mother. An English teacher put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and told him to get up and perform. He never stopped and left school at 15. By 19 he was completely bald... most agencies told him he'd never make it because of that. In 1987, the LA Times called him an “unknown British Shakespearean actor” when he was cast as Captain Picard. Then he became one of the most famous faces on Earth. You’ve probably heard that part. Here’s the part you haven’t: He spent decades as a patron of Refuge, sheltering women and children from domestic violence. But he never stopped trying to understand his father. He dug up a 1940 newspaper clipping that said his dad had come home with severe shell shock. He went to France and walked the ground where his father’s unit was pinned down under bombing for hours. He learned his father had PTSD, and nobody ever helped him. So Patrick became an ambassador for Combat Stress, a charity that helps veterans. In 2013, a young woman at a Texas convention told him she was a survivor of domestic violence. He asked, “My dear, are you okay?” Then he hopped off the stage, held her, and told her: “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” At Dragon Con, a Make-A-Wish girl dressed as Spock came to meet him. 2,000 people were waiting for him to speak... he sat down and talked with her for 15 minutes, making all of them wait. He told her that since they were friends now, whenever she saw him on screen she could wave and say, “Hello Patrick.” After 9/11, he felt helpless, so he brought his one-man A Christmas Carol back to Broadway for a full week of charity shows. He played every character himself and donated every cent. In 2019 he did it again, and every dollar went to feeding hungry New Yorkers. In 2017, he fostered a pit bull named Ginger, who had been rescued from a dogfighting ring. She was his first dog in more than 50 years. He couldn’t bring her home to England, so he found her a family. Then he kept fostering more. When he said he was done with Star Trek so many people told him the show had gotten them through the hardest times of their lives. So he wanted to see if Picard could do it one more time. Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick 🖖

Police shoot Black man having a seizure with taser—7 times. He was putting up Halloween decorations outside his own home. EMS was treating him after he collapsed in his yard. "All of a sudden a cop shows up, shoves everyone out the way, and jumps on top of him," brother said. The officer has only been identified as Sgt. Price with the Chattahoochee Police Department. He claims he was just trying to assist EMS with a "combative individual" and encountered "physical resistance." Dwight Jackson is the man attacked by the cop. He says was not intentionally combative—was defenseless and only experiencing a medical emergency. Dwight Jackson described the experience as being "more terrifying than being in the war." Incident occurred outside his house on Chattahoochee Street in Chattahoochee, Florida.

These are the faces of some former Thames Valley Police officers dismissed over child abuse offences. The very people entrusted to serve and protect the public, especially its most vulnerable, became the very people children needed protecting from. A sickening betrayal of trust.

Ms. Rachel just delivered one of the most powerful statements on the genocide in Gaza "The system that protects children from being killed, violence, harm, starvation-it's not working. The UN Commission on the Rights of the Child-it's not working. I'm not going to sit back and be like, 'Oh, that's not my problem.' Sudan, Gaza, Congo, Haiti. How kids are being treated. I am not okay with it. 20,000 kids in Gaza killed. Massacres in Sudan. We know where the weapons are coming from. We know who's funding the genocides. So it's not working."

It's fucking insane how high the UK defence budget actually is. Fifth highest in the world. Higher than France, higher than any European country except Germany. Higher than any country that actually borders an enemy. Not my fault if they budgeted it badly, spend less on coffee.

Badenoch has forgotten that Thatcher sold off the family silver, Cameron ruined public services with austerity, Johnson ruined the economy for a generation with his Brexit deal. Then he pissed £billions up the wall with dodgy Covid loans and PPE contracts. Then we had Mad Lizzy!

It is not antisemitic to say that dropping bombs on refugee camps and using 7 year old children for target practice is evil. Suggesting otherwise is nothing short of insanity.

We have known for hundreds of years that what our ruling class class call the undeserving poor, are just those too young, too old, or too infirm to work. Our media also know that. Now they want to starve us unnecessarily to pay for a war that none of us want. Bastards.

Hi Helen, I've made it clear that this isn't a commentary on the merits or not of his work. Not least because I wouldn't presume to be able to judge it. No-one can because it wasn't published. Instead it formed part of a 63-page dossier to Liverpool John Moores which became the basis of an investigation into plagiarism, of which, as you know, Arday was cleared. This thread is instead about public trust in media when there is no mechanism for review or accountability and how the press can demand questions of others when it won't answer the most basic ones about itself. It's also about the even more simple issue of sensitivity towards family members and friends who might find the spectacle of a ballroom of celebrating journalists hard to stomach.
