i was just a little boy when i started this thing and now i am an ancient man 🥲
but fr, sincerest thank you to any/everyone who’s ever worked with me on the label or supported in any way — its legitimately been a dream come true 🙏
This week marks 10 years of Fresh Selects as a label (!!!)
We’ll be celebrating the anniversary all year long in 2024 with new vinyl (yes we’ve heard your requests!), remix projects, and, as always, new music we love
Looking forward 🫡
(And thank you!)

no todos los dias se muere alguien que no solo ayudo a crear un genero de musica sino que con ello, modifico la historia del siglo 20. este documental es fabuloso.
RIP Juan Atkins.

Juan Atkins wasnt signed to a major and didn't make commercial music. There's no big capitalist machine invested in profiting from his posthumous career, so the accolades are going to come entirely from the literal millions who's lives were changed by his art- that's true legacy

None of us dance today, like this, without Juan Atkins (1962-2026)
As a child, he developed a secret technology and sequence method to breathe emancipation into consumer-grade rhythmachines.
A grandmother’s love started all this; a gifted Korg MS-10 provided a Black teenager from the outskirts of Detroit means to produce a forever thing. An architecture for us all to dream up worlds where a future with technology is funky and not deathgiving. May your philosophy carry us into the next. REST IN PEACE. Now in sonic infinitum mode.
i can't stand a "i fucked up and need to get this done ASAP before a dangerously impending deadline and the only way that can happen is if everyone else treats it like this is their emergency too" type. especially when that type is me. 🙂↔️

Prince 10 years early. The original Strawberry Letter 23 displayed a level of prog abstraction fused to R&B accessibility that Charles Stepney, transitioning EW&F from post-Trane Jazz to R&B would have🖤.Legend has it that The Stones wanted him after Mick Taylor left & he said No
Album of the day. It's hard to believe Shuggie Otis was only 18 years old when he recorded this, his second solo album, Freedom Flight. He had long cut his teeth as a veteran guitarist, both on the road and in the studio, thanks to his father, R&B and blues legend Johnny Otis. So his skills were already well-developed by the time he made this monster psychedelic-blues-soul-funk opus, highlighted by the original version of his best-known song, "Strawberry Letter 23" (which became a huge smash when the Brothers Johnson covered it six years later on their 1977 release, Right On Time). A true "musician's musician," Shuggie plays a bunch of instruments (very well) and shows himself to be a great bassist as he is a guitarist. Also, heavyweights like George Duke, Wilton Felder, and Aynsley Dunbar guesting on here doesn't hurt at all. While Shuggie may have not been a household name in his heyday, any true music aficionado will agree that this classic reinforces the idea of Shuggie being the true missing link between Sly Stone and Prince.

if you doomscroll twitter all day of course it looks like the world is ending but if you just get off the internet and go outside you’ll find that the world is actually ending oh god this is it
one of the funniest plot points in The Sopranos is Janice beefing with her late mom's care nurse over the record collection she left behind, as if its some goldmine of antique treasures and not 20 or so Barbara Streisand and Connie Francis records worth maybe $0.25 each
