The prosecutor's office that put him on death row asked the court to stop the execution.
The victim's own family asked the court to stop the execution.
Missouri executed Marcellus Williams anyway.
Felicia Gayle, a former newspaper reporter, was killed in her home in University City, Missouri, in 1998. Marcellus Williams was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to death.
The case against him rested substantially on two witnesses — a cellmate and a former partner — both of whom stood to gain, including from reward money.
No physical evidence tied him to the house. Hair and fingerprints recovered there did not match him.
The murder weapon was a kitchen knife left at the scene. DNA testing conducted years later found male DNA on the handle that was not his.
It later emerged that the knife had been handled by members of the prosecution team without gloves before trial — which contaminated the evidence and meant the one test that might have settled it could no longer settle anything.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's office — the office that had obtained the conviction — moved to vacate it.
The family of Felicia Gayle opposed the execution. They said they did not want it carried out in their name.
The Missouri Attorney General fought to proceed. The Governor declined clemency. The Supreme Court declined to intervene.
Marcellus Williams was executed on 24 September 2024. He was fifty-five.
Count who was asking for it to stop. The prosecutors. The victim's family. Jurors from his own trial, who said afterwards they would have voted differently.
And the state did it anyway.
Everything else we post about the death penalty is an argument. This one is not an argument. It is a receipt.
When even the people closest to the case ask the state to stop, and the execution happens anyway, what does justice mean?
Read our book and join us to confront these cases that raise questions we cannot afford to ignore

After several incompetent investigations and over two years of further investigations, the outcome of the SRA’s investigation into Mark Lewis is delayed by Carter Ruck v SRA. This is despite the crucial documents being in the public domain because I have published them. The SRA does not need to use s 44B of the Solicitors Act 1974.
The SRA won’t even say how long it will take to decide if Carter Ruck is relevant. It really is the most spectacularly useless regulator. It is only a matter of time before there is another scandalous failure of regulation.

Cllr Sam Journet has resigned from his post as portfolio for SEND in Essex. In his resignation he stated -
Some of what I've seen from civil servants has shocked me and doesn't sit comfortably with me. EHCP requests have been refused, and there have been cases where I directed officers that a decision be reconsidered and that did not happen.
I wasn't asking for a particular outcome. I was asking for decisions to be looked at again because of the struggles SEND children and their families are facing in our community.
When parents are worried about their child and feel their concerns haven't been heard, as a SEND Councillor myself, that matters to me deeply and I will not stand idly by whilst that is happening under my watch.
@_Chris_Coghlan has been leading the fight for SEND to parliament and raising concerns of misconduct in public office and officers ignoring UK law - 98% of Sen tribunals are found in a parents favour where the law has simply been applied
Is it time for cllrs and MPs who have very real concerns about SEND council decisions to come together and work cross party for a statutory inquiry into SEND services across the UK ?
Do these failures to support Sen children with education, health and appropriate social care also then feed into to other inquiries like the Mental Health inquiries where many people failed included autistic or ADHD people who had been failed throughout their schooling, bullied belittled and misunderstood and struggled during adulthood, or vulnerable Sen children groomed in care homes and part of the grooming gang inquiry ?
@andyburnham has made it his mission to end homelessness , he must be aware that many people he mets are SEN and often undiagnosed slipping through the cracks of society, had an education that didn’t work for them, vulnerable to abuse exploitation and often fleeing to escape abuse , not managing to stay in education or struggling to get a job and manage a household, some with things like undiagnosed ADHD self medicating via drugs. Because often when we see a homeless adult we don’t stop and wonder their origin story
Andy Burnham has also stated he wants to work cross party to fix issues including social care, his stated he wants more options at age 14 for children who prefer more technical skills courses. His stated he wants to address misogyny- well that happens to Sen woman and girls who wait insane lengths of time to get a proper diagnosis compared to men and boys and this again impacts their education, health and care through out their childhood and on into adulthood.
Cllr Journet from his statement clearly wanted to make changes and improve Sen services and felt he wasn’t able to do so and had concerns about some decisions - are regulators demanding accountability where faults are found and has the government given these regulators the teeth to actually make a difference ?
Ultimately public services are funded by public funds so it is only right that should include accountability on why so many decisions are being made badly - the councils in England win just 2% of cases where UK law is simply applied at SEN tribunal, yet
SEN tribunals include multiple council staff and often barristers.
These people are not free they are being paid via your taxes to argue claims that have legal merit just 2% of the time whilst denying the lawful school place and therapies that child needs in the year wait to get to a final hearing something that Cllr Playle perhaps should of thought about before commenting - adhering to the law should not be viewed as “lofty”

British Transport Police are appealing for information after a woman was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a man on a train travelling from Plymouth to St Austell.
At around 11pm on Saturday, 12 September, the man allegedly sat beside the woman, exposed himself and repeatedly sexually assaulted her. He also masturbated, flicking semen onto the inside of the carriage windows.
He left the train at St Austell railway station.
Detectives have released an image of a man they believe could have information that may assist their investigation and want to identify him.
Anyone who recognises the man or witnessed the incident is urged to contact British Transport Police.

Channel 4 Dispatches went undercover inside the Financial Ombudsman Service @financialombuds. What they filmed should have shut the place down.
Their own staff said this on camera:
"I'm not proud to admit it but I've done it myself. Just taken a chance and just slung stuff through, with any old decision."
"You're more likely to meet your targets if you're not upholding them."
11,000 cases fell into a black hole for two years. Some of those letters said "I am going to lose my house."
@UKParliament demanded answers. Baroness Ros Altmann called it shocking. MPs threatened a full inquiry.
FOS said the footage was "not representative."
Nothing changed.
Fast forward to today. My own complaint against @rsagroup / @IntactInsurance is now being formally handled by Gary Smith @G8GWS of @MeridianLegals.
Gary is the lawyer leading the FOS Litigation Group, a group built on over 1,000 documented FOS failures. He is preparing a judicial review of the FOS.
My case has been submitted by Meridian as my regulated representative because what happened to me fits the same pattern Channel 4 filmed.
If you have had a complaint dismissed by the FOS and you believe it was handled without proper scrutiny, contact Gary directly at Meridian Legal Services.
