A few years ago I gave free math lessons to a 17 year old girl in matric. She showed up to 1 lesson then ditched the next three. I tried everything to get her to commit. Even offering financial incentives for good marks in her finals. (This isnt even my child). I just wanted her to have a better life than her mom. But if she had push got into varsity and worked hard we would have helped support her. Anyway. Today I received a call from her poor mother. She tells me she's in a bad space. She got pregnant in that same period. Instead of studying she was drinking and having unprotected sex. Flunked the year and left school with the typical ANC 30% pass mark. Now shes got a 1 year old child. No job. No future. Just another sassa grant. People really do decide their futures. This isnt about disadvantage. This is about bad choices.
