On my substack this morning I explain why @LeoVaradkar is wrong on his demand that nationalists in the south apologise for partition. What voters do deserve is a national apology for the policy of economic protectionism of De Valera.

Another tax hike that most people aren’t aware of.
PRSI going up again and will annually until 2028.
You can bet there’ll be more after that.
The project of de-anglicizing the Republic was the priority over not just ending partition but also mundane matters such as creating economic growth and employment opportunities for the southern nationalists that Varadkar believes owe an apology to nationalists in NI.

For Éamon de Valera, Ireland being an economic basket case was a price worth paying for not being part of the Union and never, ever being seen as British. When de Valera moved into the Taoiseach’s office in 1932 Ireland’s population was 2.95 million. In 1959 when he became President after only two short spells out of power it had fallen to 2.85 million.

This Republic of de Valera’s making resulted in many things. First, it was a hostile environment for the small Protestant minority that remained there. Secondly, it was not a state the Unionists in Northern Ireland could ever join.

So this Macklemore nonsense all over my time line. His concert is his business. But the media going into overdrive to act as his PR machine is pathetic.
Why doesn't this surprise me?

Cyclists are continuing to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, despite being asked to dismount.
Around seven security staff have been stationed near Oxford Circus, calling out to cyclists to get off their bikes, with mixed success.

TUSLA CHILDREN TARGETED BY CRIME GANGS FOR SEXUAL EXPLOITATION
A report in today’s Irish Daily Mail by Sarah Slater warns that organised crime groups are deliberately targeting vulnerable girls in the care of Tusla and sexually exploiting them.
Ruth Breslin, head of the Sexual Exploitation Research and Policy Institute (SERP), said girls in residential care are being identified by criminals, invited to parties and plied with alcohol and drugs before being taken to private residences or hotels where groups of men may be waiting. In some cases, she said, men pay for sexual access to the children.
Breslin said the recent case of a 14-year-old girl subjected to “horrifying” sexual exploitation by several men was not isolated. Research carried out by SERP in 2022 had identified similar concerns, particularly involving vulnerable children in State care.
She also pointed to criminal exploitation affecting boys, saying some young people are drawn into drug dealing and controlled through debt, threats or fear.
Garda sources told the newspaper that cases involving teenagers in State care include alleged “sextorting” after contact through dating apps and girls becoming caught up in the drugs trade before being sexually exploited to pay off debts. One source described an online “subculture” in which some perpetrators meet through forums and dating apps.
The report follows revelations about the 14-year-old girl for whom the High Court ordered special care but for whom a secure placement could not be found. Taoiseach Micheál Martin told the Dáil that the Government was working on the case and said staffing shortages in specialised care facilities remained a fundamental problem.
Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission chief commissioner Liam Herrick said the adults involved in exploiting vulnerable children must receive serious attention, warning that children can be groomed through gifts, affection, drugs or promises of protection.
The report raises a disturbing issue extending beyond the shortage of special-care beds: children already in the care of the State are being deliberately targeted by organised criminals for sexual and criminal exploitation.

Janice Turner in the Times, serves it cold to Sally Rooney.
"Rooney’s work brims with jaded ennui: achievement is empty, love problematic, sex just a serotonin blip before postcoital gloom. Beautiful World, Where Are You? whines the title of her third novel. I’ve met young Ukrainians under nightly Russian drone attack who find more laughter and joy in life than her privileged, Mogadoned nihilists.
The longing to feel something — anything — defines her characters and her own life. But now, at 35, Rooney has found meaning at last. The cause of Palestine is “to join in something greater than our selves, to participate in some small way in a struggle for human liberation”. Gaza is not about the suffering of a people but Rooney’s self-realisation."

If you are an acclaimed, voice-of-a-generation novelist there are infinite practical ways to deploy your fame and money to aid Gaza’s hungry, injured and displaced. But Rooney has chosen one that gives her the ultimate prize: pain-free public martyrdom.
Excellent by @BDSixsmith Whatever happened to don't complain don't explain?

Long before Trump, European governments, the UK and Irish governments have been pumping funny money into the system the minute bad things happen. Of course the voters often demand this – moronic voters demanding that something must be done. The best thing a government can do is often nothing.

I've just been to the west of Ireland, perhaps the greenest place I have ever seen, and one of the most comprehensively stripped of nature too.
Driving north from Shannon, you pass mile after mile of luminous green, almost treeless fields, until the road rises onto the dramatic limestone of the Burren.
We were there to celebrate the marriage of my step-nephew (if such a thing exists) Isaac Ferry to beautiful conservationist Elizabeth Quartararo. The ceremony took place high above the Atlantic, at an ethereal spot beloved of Isaac's late mother, my sister-in-law Lucy Birley.

On Monday, Oxford Street will ban cars and be pedestrian only. A good idea which should probably be applied to O'Connell Street.
