At @MCFMI & @unwomenlebanon’s event, I stressed that #Lebanon’s recovery must be Government-led, coordinated & shaped by local priorities. Across south #Lebanon, I’ve met women working tirelessly to help their communities rebuild. Their leadership must shape recovery decisions.

🇺🇸🇸🇦🇮🇷🇾🇪“Saudi Arabia Faces ‘Worst-Case Scenario’ After Being Rebuffed by Trump The kingdom is in a state of strategic shock after coming under attack from an emboldened Iran and failing to win more U.S. military support, analysts say.” 👉nytimes.com/2026/09/14/world… by @viviannereim “Right now the Saudis are really frustrated,” said Michael Ratney, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia. “In some sense it’s their worst-case scenario.” (…) “The reason a country like Saudi Arabia invests so heavily in developing a security partnership with the United States is for just this sort of eventuality,” said Mr. Ratney, the former ambassador. “Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, the country’s de facto ruler, had reasons to be confident in that partnership. For years, his government has invested billions of dollars and extensive political capital in building personal relationships with Mr. Trump and his family. But when the crown prince asked Mr. Trump last week to take military action against the Houthis, the president declined, according to officials with knowledge of the conversations. Saudi officials and pundits have been clear that the kingdom does not want to fight the Houthis alone. That is especially true because an earlier military campaign that Saudi Arabia led against the group turned into a decade-long quagmire. “This demands international support, not only from Saudi Arabia and regional countries,” Abdulrahman al-Rashed, a columnist close to the Saudi government, wrote in a Saudi-owned newspaper on Saturday. “Mr. Trump, however, appears reluctant to get involved. “Already confronting one open-ended conflict with Iran, with an overstretched Navy and a diminishing munitions stockpile, it’s unsurprising that he does not want to open this new front,” said Dan Shapiro, a former top Middle East policy official in the Pentagon during the Biden administration. “But it is bitterly disappointing to the Saudis.” On Saturday, Mr. Trump told journalists on a trip to Ireland that the Houthis had “called us and they don’t want to fight with us.” “There’s just one country that they’re not too happy with and we’ll get that straightened out,” he added, referring to Saudi Arabia.”
🇺🇸 🇸🇦 🇱🇧 A useful reality check for Lebanese leaders who still imagine that Trump will get Israel to exercise restraint or withdraw. MBS has pledged nearly $1 TRILLION in US investments and signed a nearly $142 billion package of American arms purchases. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund whose board MBS chairs, also invested $2 billion with Jared Kushner, despite objections from its own investment advisers. Yet when MBS called Trump twice asking for US action against the Houthis, a major strategic threat to Saudi Arabia, Trump said no. Lebanon has neither Saudi money, nor Saudi strategic weight, nor Saudi access to Trump’s inner circle. So what exactly makes some Lebanese politicians think Washington will come to their rescue? If MBS cannot cash that cheque, how can anyone in Beirut think he can? To paraphrase a line reportedly attributed to Kissinger: “It is dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s vassal can be fatal.”

If I were President of the Republic, I would not speak about the South from the Presidential Palace. @LBpresidency #lebanon I would go there. I would find a house scarred by war, a house with shattered windows, broken walls, and the wounds of conflict still visible, and I would make it the temporary residence of the President of Lebanon. I would raise the Lebanese flag above it. And I would remain there until the occupation ends and Lebanon’s sovereignty over its land is respected. From that house, I would call every president, every prime minister, every ambassador, and every international institution. And my message would be simple: The South is Lebanon. It is not a bargaining chip. It is not a buffer zone. It is not a piece of land whose future can be decided in foreign capitals. The South is the heart of my country. Its villages are our villages. Its mountains are our mountains. Its olive trees are our olive trees. Its families are our families. And every meter of its soil belongs to Lebanon. We Lebanese have disagreed about many things. We have endured division, political crises, economic collapse, war, and displacement. But there must be one principle greater than every disagreement: Lebanon belongs to all Lebanese, and Lebanese territory is not negotiable. Not one village. Not one hill. Not one meter. And I would say to the people of the South: You will not stand alone. Your President will not ask you to endure from the comfort of Beirut. If your homes are threatened, the presidency will stand among your homes. If you are afraid for your children, your country will stand beside your children. The Lebanese flag will fly wherever Lebanese sovereignty must be defended. And to the international community, I would say: We seek peace. We do not seek another generation of war. We want our children to inherit universities instead of bunkers, businesses instead of battlefields, and a country they do not have to leave in order to build a future. But peace cannot mean surrendering our sovereignty. Peace cannot require Lebanon to accept the loss of Lebanese land. We extend our hand to the world in diplomacy, in international law, and in peace, but we will never sign away the dignity or territory of our Republic. I would remain in the South until the day I could return to Baabda knowing that every Lebanese citizen, from the northernmost village to the southernmost border, lives beneath the same flag and the same sovereignty. Because a President cannot claim to represent Lebanon while treating any part of Lebanon as expendable. The South is Lebanon. The South is our heart. And Lebanon will never abandon its own. Long live the Lebanese people. Long live Lebanon. Tarek Kudsi
