🇪🇺 has been repeatedly calling on #Azerbaijani authorities to fully ensure restoration of movement of goods and people along #LachinCorridor, in line with #ICJ orders, as well as unrestricted supplies of energy.
The current situation is not sustainable and creates tensions.

🧵 Despite persistent efforts, we are currently unable to deliver aid via the Lachin corridor & other routes, including Aghdam.
With these convoys blocked, our concern is that the humanitarian situation will further deteriorate.

[OUT NOW] The Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh are on the brink of a humanitarian crisis. For the newest Kennan Cable, @Lara discusses how a road blockade is threatening to spark conflict, derail peace talks, and escalate the risk of ethnic cleansing: 🔗 wilsoncenter.org/publication…

ALT "Left alone, the status quo around Nagorno-Karabakh is a dangerous one. It undermines international institutions, including the ICJ, the highest court of the UN <...>. It sets a dangerous precedent for future conflicts, setting in motion a coercive negotiation tactic that resembles humanitarian blackmail: the local population must accept the terms or face increasingly difficult conditions through limits on food, fuel, and basic supplies." -- Lara Setrakian, Journalist; President of the Applied Policy Research Center

“…outsourcing peacebuilding to Russia was a bad idea. Now, in the shadow of the Ukraine war, that policy is enabling another humanitarian catastrophe and compromising Western interests in the region.” writes @Lara Setrakian. #Armenia
“As Russian-Turkish ties have grown closer, Russia has been more reluctant to push back on Azerbaijan's behavior. That has left the situation in freefall, moving toward more serious and potentially deadly outcomes,” writes @Lara

Thanks to @Lara @ForeignPolicy There are considerations by Aliyev that would steer away from full-scale war, but it is not a given,” Mamedov said. “What would stop it is if the U.S. and the EU send a very clear message that Azerbaijan will pay a diplomatic and economic price.”
Wrote this piece for @ForeignPolicy on the crisis around the #LachinCorridor. My thanks to all the experts - Armenian, Azerbaijani and otherwise - who shared their time with me.

#Russia remains tight-lipped about the crisis. You will hardly see any reporting in the Russian mainstream media either. Probably because few would be proud about what the Russian soldiers have to face with some difficult neighbours testing Moscow's declining power in the region.
