🏦 Can stablecoins count as "cash" on the balance sheet? By @LarryPureLabs
On Aug 18, 2026, FASB proposed an update clarifying when certain digital assets, including stablecoins, qualify as cash equivalents. Comments close Nov 19, 2026. It is still only a proposal, with no effective date set.
💡 Key point: FASB isn't redefining cash equivalents. It's showing how the existing definition applies, and asking for more disclosure.
📌 What decides it is the holder's rights, not the token. The proposal's three examples:
✅ Qualifies: the company can redeem directly with the issuer for USD, 1:1, without significant cost or limits, and the issuer's reserves are cash and short-term U.S. Treasuries (original maturity of three months or less) held in a segregated account.
❌ Doesn't qualify: the company can only sell on a secondary market, with no direct redemption right.
❌ Doesn't qualify: the issuer's reserves include riskier assets such as crypto or gold.
So two companies holding the same stablecoin could classify it differently. Buying USDC on an exchange doesn't automatically qualify it. Redemption rights, account arrangements and reserve quality matter more.
🏢 Coinbase: effective Dec 31, 2025, Coinbase voluntarily began classifying its payment stablecoins (USDC, EURC, PYUSD) as cash equivalents, based on near-instant 1:1 USD exchange and reserve quality. That was its own judgment on its own holdings, and customer platform assets are not included.
⚠️ Reclassifying doesn't create cash or add profit. It changes how the statements present the same asset. Loan covenants depend on their own contract terms, not accounting labels.
📅 Dates
• Dec 31, 2025: Coinbase policy change effective
• Aug 18, 2026: FASB proposal issued (ED 2026-ED400)
• Nov 19, 2026: comment deadline, which is not an effective date

1. How companies prove direct redemption rights to auditors
2. How detailed disclosure will be, including whether each significant stablecoin must be named

Recent hardware wallet supply chain security concerns are making us rethink how crypto assets should be protected.
Does secure crypto storage really require another dedicated hardware device?
Using a hardware wallet also means introducing another device whose manufacturing, distribution, and handling process must be trusted.
Pure Vault takes a different approach.
Instead of adding separate hardware, it leverages hardware-backed security environments such as Secure Enclave and TEE already built into modern smartphones.
Private Key access is separated from general Wallet data, helping prevent Keys from being directly exposed to the normal application layer. Transaction signing is only allowed after user authentication, while Key access and signing processes are controlled within the device-level security architecture.
In other words, Pure Vault uses the security hardware already built into your smartphone as a protected environment for Key access and signing.

🏛️ DTCC just published the first operational framework for its Tokenization Service (Oct 16, 2026). By @LarryPureLabs
Here's what it clarifies (since many of you asked):
📌 Launch scope
• 25 securities at launch, from three classes: Russell 1000 stocks, select ETFs and U.S. Treasuries
• About $30T of assets are eligible for tokenization. That is the potential scope, not the size of the first batch
• No tickers or CUSIPs have been disclosed yet
🔄 Conversion
• Between traditional book-entry securities and tokens
• Weekdays, 2:00–18:00 ET, with a target of 15 minutes
• Submitted by DTC participants through the UI or API
⛓️ Transfers
• 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers between DTC-registered wallets, within the same network
• Same CUSIP and same rights. DTC keeps the official books and records
🌐 Networks
• Launch: Canton (CIP-56) and DTCC's private Besu network (ERC-20)
• 2027: Stellar (SEP-41) and Circle Arc (ERC-20), plus other L1/L2 networks depending on demand
💵 Treasuries
• Select on-chain asset services, such as dividends and maturities
• Cash payments still settle through traditional accounts
🗺️ 2027 roadmap
• On-chain net settlement, digital cash and collateral management
• More securities, networks and asset services
• Unified records for book-entry and on-chain positions
❓ Still unknown
• The 25 securities and the exact launch date. The DTCC hub still says Q4 2026
• The registered wallet list
• Stellar and Arc timing
• Volumes and participating institutions
The takeaway: the 25 securities and the 15-minute conversions matter more than the $30T headline. Watch the first batch and whether digital cash and on-chain settlement actually arrive in 2027.
