The Sexually Transmitted African Presidency, and Why It So Rarely Shines
In Africa, as in the rest of the world, children who take over power directly from their fathers have a rough time of it. They are dismissed as dim, untalented nepo babies who got the job, as Kenyans like to say, because it was “sexually transmitted”.
The fathers at least sweated for it. They fought for independence, led a coup, or put in the hard graft of stealing the election that started them out. The children got it on a silver platter, and the country never lets them forget it.
The received wisdom is that Togo’s Faure Gnassingbé, who took over when his father died in February 2005, is the best example to have escaped that straitjacket. And perhaps Joseph Kabila inherited Congo in 2001 after a bodyguard shot his father. He did slaightly better than his old man.
Mahamat Déby picked up Chad in 2021, the jury is still out. Ali Bongo got Gabon in 2009 after his father. He ended bably. In Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth had the premiership handed to him by his father in 2017, he wasn’t a disaster.
The less-harshly-judged sons waited for Dad’s grave to settle. Uhuru Kenyatta arrived 35 years after Jomo, Botswana’s Ian Khama 28 years after Seretse, but we will spare them because they didn’t take over the baton directly.
The failures who never got to sit on the throne make a longer, sadder list. In Zaire, Mobutu’s son Ndolo Michel Mathieu Kongulu Mobutu, better known as Kongolo, was a captain in the Division spéciale présidentielle, nicknamed “Saddam Hussein”. As Laurent Kabila’s rebels reached Kinshasa in May 1997, he was accused of involvement in the assassination of army chief General Mahele. Within eighteen months he was dead.
Then there is the pattern where the fathers make the play when its too late. Hosni Mubarak spent a decade fattening son Gamal for the job, then tried to serve him just as Egyptians filled Tahrir Square in 2011. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi became the face of his father’s succession only when the bombs were already falling.
Abdoulaye Wade in Senegal tried to slip son Karim in through a constitutional back door in 2011, and Dakar burned. These “wazee” waited until the rope was round their necks, then called the son over to help.
The waiting room is still full. In Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has parked his son Teodorín in the vice-presidency. Uganda’s First Son and army chief, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced he will run for president in 2031. Congo-Brazzaville has Denis-Christel Sassou Nguesso, a cabinet minister since 2021. In Cameroon, Paul Biya made his son Franck vice-president in April 2026. But let us not get ahead of ourselves, and stick to what has come to pass.
But back to Ali Bongo. He lasted 14 years against his father Omar’s 41. He suffered a stroke in 2018, his wife and son were accused of minding the till, and in 2023 he “won” a third term only to be toppled by his own cousin within days.
Faure has fared better largely because his father set the bar extremely low. Extremely superstititious, Eyadéma helped kill independence leader Sylvanus Olympio in 1963 and seized power in 1967. He claimed he couldn’t die because he survived a plane crash in 1974, starred in his own comic books, and ruled by fear for 38 years. Next to that, the son merely had to avoid being a monster. Still, he rewrote the constitution so that term limits no longer trouble him. The apple rarely falls far from the tree.
So State House turns out to be a poor school for presidents. The children grow up among flatterers, not rivals. They learn to be applauded, not to outwit anyone. The fathers don’t intend to die so they teach their children to be loyal rather than skilled. It’s difficult to learn a new role when your teacher refuses to leave the classroom.

You can't #conflict with 4 generations and think it's normal. You conflicted with past governments, conflicted with our parents, conflicted with us, and now, you're conflicting with your "grandchildren". You can't always be the one who's right & the others wrong. Not supernatural

If you read the US Investment report on Uganda, each mention of "judiciary" or "courts" is followed by a paragraph about corruption, & lack of independence from the judicial officers!
We are killing the judiciary so the regime lives; but also chocking the nation while at it!

We have hundreds of political prisoners including Dr Erias Lukwago. Land grabbing continues to affect communities across Central Uganda and people are losing their lives everyday in Kampala because of poor roads.
Yet Buganda Kingdom, one of Uganda’s most respected cultural institutions, remains silent on these issues. But when a young man stands before his phone camera and says a few words, the kingdom is quick to issue statements.

Loud chants of jailed veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye echoed through Rukungiri Main Stadium as residents repeatedly shouted his name during an anti-corruption campaign rally organized by Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara.
The rally, aimed at boosting the fight against corruption and evaluating government program implementations in Rukungiri District, took an unexpected turn when the crowd rallied around the former opposition leader's name.
Dr Besigye has been on prison remand since November 2024 when he was picked from Nairobi, Kenya by Ugandan security operatives and later charged with treason.

No wonder Singiza in Feb 2025 when he was High Court Judge said he’s taking an administrative decision to send Besigye back to prison because he was too ill to be in court. He’s today openly endorsing the very person that has vowed to hang Besigye! Who will still have any confidence in the @JudiciaryUG to administer Justice?

Uganda's justice system hits a new low with the head of the Judicial Service Commission Singiza Douglas openly endorsing Museveni's brutal, criminal son!
The JSC is legally mandated to enforce the Judicial Code of Conduct , which strictly forbids judicial officers from engaging in partisan politics - both in and out of the courtroom. How is that body expected to discipline judicial officers who violate the Code when its very head is breaching the code with impunity? How are the citizens, who are opposed to the criminal regime expected to get justice under such a system? Those who fail to get justice after being abducted and violated by the criminal he is endorsing?!
No wonder, Singiza, when he was still a magistrate he was famed for covering up the worst crimes against humanity, and reminding victims of torture.
Our nation has hit rock bottom! We have a lot of work to resuscitate it!

In this week’s article, I argue that Zeija’s scheduled celebration is an insult to the country as it is a call to reflection on what we have become as a society.

Flavian Zeija’s November 21 celebration: A spectre on our national conscience
In Rukungiri, three sons of the same soil tell different stories about Uganda.
Flavian Zeija sits at the top of the Judiciary. Kizza Besigye has spent nearly two years in detention, and court proceedings have been marked by denied bail applications and deteriorating health.
Videos and testimonies of a tortured Sam Mugumya are everywhere, and yet his lawyer’s habeas corpus applications continue to fall on deaf ears. On November 21, Zeija will celebrate his first year as Chief Justice in the very district they all call home.
There will be food, singing and thanksgiving. But what does it mean to celebrate the head of the Judiciary while fellow sons of the same soil are caught up in questions about freedom, detention and justice?

It’s becoming even funny at this point. How you a law maker, doesn’t see a problem with a judicial officer, worse, a head of the JSC to not only endorse any candidate or political outfit, but also endorse a serving army officer for a political position! Bambi I am sure Singiza had wanted to do this secretly so that he secures himself another promotion but because you lot are either clueless or it’s sheer impunity, you thought this portrays PLU as strong and popular.
This morning at the Office of the National Chairman in Nakasero, I was honoured to receive Hon. Justice Dr. Singiza Douglas Karekona, Chairperson of Uganda’s Judicial Service Commission, on a courtesy call.
Justice Singiza warmly endorsed Gen. @mkainerugaba for President of Uganda. A powerful affirmation of the vision we share for a stronger, more just nation

So, the guns & bullets found in the possession of Gen Peter Elwelu, are they part of the subversive plot spearheaded by German diplomats that we were told about last year, or we're supposed to forget all about the Germans like we forgot the guns found in Bobi Wine's Arua hotel room back in 2017?
Regardless, I must give the UPDF credit for the fact they carried out a raid on a house with guns in Namanve - just a few kilometres from Kampala - but were so professional, efficient, & discreet that no one saw anything! Not resident of the area with a phone, an askari, or stranger with a camera phone to zoom in from a distance, or a loud mouth to say what they saw. The Navy Seals in Abbottabad practiced for years but still crashed a helicopter while at it; and someone even tweeted the unusual sight of helicopters there at 1 am! They must be green with envy seeing how the Mighty UPDF makes these things look like kids' play!
Even more, the UPDF itself must be commended for not sharing any photos of videos of raid - just the finished products, guns! That level of taking the right to privacy seriously is special for an African army, man! Some may even say they were "unnecessarily" serious while at it!
Of course when Elwelu is captured, a photo of his half-naked body - with his HUGE tummy - will find its way to Twitter at 1 am or thereabout, but that is not surprising given that men's tummies, generally, do not enjoy the same right to privacy as their houses in Uganda. Good start on our path to the right to privacy though...

Court Orders Probe into Source of Sam Mugumya Videos.
The High Court in Kampala has ordered the government and security agencies to investigate the origin of videos circulating on social media that allegedly show political activist Sam Mugumya in a severely weakened condition. Civil Division Judge Simon Peter Kinobe issued the directive on Monday while hearing a second application seeking an order compelling authorities to produce Mugumya in court and explain his whereabouts.
The application was filed by Mugumya’s lawyers from Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates, who allege that the activist was abducted by armed men in Mbarara on August 26, 2025, and has since been held incommunicado at a military facility in Kasenyi. Mugumya’s lawyers, led by Kato Tumusiime, allege that armed men seized him in Mbarara on August 26, 2025, bundled him into a vehicle and took him to an undisclosed location. They contend that he has since been detained at the SFC facility in Kasenyi without access to his family, lawyers or personal physician and has not been brought before a competent court. The lawyers further argue that the facility is not gazetted for the detention of civilians and that Mugumya has neither been charged nor presented before court since his alleged arrest; Their application is supported by affidavits from people who claim to have information about his alleged detention, including Raymond Asiku Eden and Norman Tumuhimbise. Asiku, who says he was abducted in December 2025 and detained at an SFC-manned facility, claims he personally saw Mugumya while in custody. |#TruthOnTime

The case has been adjourned to 9th Nov. the judge has given the state 2 weeks to conclude investigations about the whereabouts of Sam Mugumya and file a report before the 9th.
The state doesn’t need to conduct any investigations. It has Mugumya and they know where they are holding him, we have seen videos, witnesses have seen him, the CDF has admitted having him. What more are we looking for?
After appeals to the Principal Judge for reallocation, Sam Mugumya’s second bail application was moved from 17th Nov to today albeit before the same Judge, Kinobe. The state has already responded again, without any shame, denying having him in his custody or knowing his whereabout as the police officers illegally detaining and threatening @AloikinOpoloje told her! #FreeSamMugumya #JusticeForSamMugumya
